The woman who once refused to wear her medical emergency bracelet now wears a Team Type 1 cycling jersey to get the word out that diabetics can manage their disease well enough to compete as elite athletes.

To amplify that message, Longmont United Hospital invited Becky Furuta, 33, to speak next Tuesday on how she transformed the shame she felt over her 2007 diagnosis of late-onset type 1 diabetes into a reason to ride with the best diabetic athletes in the world on Team Type 1.

Team Type 1's chief executive officer and founder, Phil Southerland, established the Atlanta-based nonprofit in 2005 to "redefine boundaries of those living with diabetes," according to the organization's website. That mission appealed to Furuta, an optician and vision therapist who in November was selected to ride on a Team Type 1 amateur cycling team, spokesman Dave Eldridge said.
