NHS managers who fail to blow the whistle on medical malpractice will be barred from working for the health service, under new laws.
Guidance from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) states that being “privy to” serious misconduct or mismanagement is sufficient grounds to be blocked from employment on the boards of NHS trusts.
The new “fit and proper person” requirement was passed by law following widespread concerns over the Mid-Staffs scandal, where managers who presided over “appalling” failings were never held to account.
The changes mean that any NHS workers who is “responsible for, been privy to, contributed to or facilitated any serious misconduct or mismanagement (whether unlawful of not)” can be barred from working at board level.
