A man who has type 1 diabetes is calling for more awareness after being questioned about his insulin and jelly beans while trying to enter a nightclub in Adelaide's CBD.

Such unnecessary ignorance. I know they’ve improved access to clubs and things in the U.K. but it’s tedious to have to explain everything. I did lose my patience a bit with a doorman a few years ago who seemed to take pleasure in delaying me as long as possible and carrying out an inquisition on every item in my bag 🙄

Some people are incredibly ignorant.

I think they were probably just doing their job, preventing people bringing things in they shouldn't.

Interesting setup he has there, a vial of insulin designed for a pen (or can one not obtain standard sized vials these days) along with an old-school syringe. I'd have thought a pen would have aroused less attention and would be less easily misused - in the blurb it talks about a small syringe you twist onto something though, so perhaps the image and text don't tally.

I can also understand that they may ask questions about a large quantity of jelly beans, perhaps selecting something in a sealed packet would around less suspicion that the jelly beans might contain more than just sugar and gelatine.

You cannot expect doormen to be experts on medical conditions. Anything in a ziplock bag is going to look suspicious to them and they are there to keep everyone safe and also protect the reputation of the business, so looking out for drugs will be a key element of their job. Drug dealers these days have all sorts of clever ways of disguising their wares and drugs come in all sorts of shapes sizes and colours.
If you think this is ignorance on their part, then you are probably guilty of being ignorant of the challenges of their job. None of us know everything about everything. As a retired Police Officer I can see how the contents of that zip lock bag look very suspicious, even as I am also a Type 1 diabetic. I agree with @SimonP that a pen injector would look more "medical" than that tiny syringe, but I can also appreciate that from the point of view of carrying stuff, that syringe clearly cuts down on bulk and enables you to put stuff in a pocket more easily. I think this whole pack has probably been put together for that purpose, but unfortunately it looks rather suspicious as a result. I can sympathize with both parties involved here and it is an unfortunate situation but one that we need to be able to view from both sides and perhaps think about how we can lessen the risk of something like that happening to us perhaps by carrying some documentation to corroborate our use.

Yes, there is too many bad people in the world. Drugs can come as jelly babies these days. People have injected people. I really would be scared to go out these days if i was young as its mind blowing .
Its sad but the bouncers as Rebrascora said are just doing their job sadly. Conversely I can also see it leaving someone feeling vulnerable.
Perhaps cards could be used but I am sure criminals would abuse those too .
