Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello all, i hope i can get to understand better the issues surrounding Diabetes. Been a tough time last 2 years following a stroke i was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes but only 43 one point in the zone but today having taken prescribed drugs etc my level has risen to 100 doc has taken the step to quadruple my metaformin and added a new drug (name forgotten) starting tomorrow. Anybody know what the implication of such an increase might be

Welcome to the forum
I am surprised that if your HbA1C was 43 mmol/mol that you would have been prescribed any medication but advised to make some modest dietary changes.
I wonder what has happened in the meantime to now give you an HbA1C of 100mmol/mol as that is pretty high.
The impact of the increased medication partly depends on how well you tolerate the metformin, it is usual to increase the dose over a few weeks to avoid stomach issues.
What is the other medication?
It is better to reduce blood glucose slowly to avoid issues with your eyes and nerves.

Part of the stroke has led to memory issues and didn't take the name on board but will see it tomorrow as the pharmacy didn't actually have any in stock. With Regards to eye issues it was because if a sudden change in my vision that the blood test took place that led to the drug increase. I also have on going issues with low blood count and 2 anyerisms which i should of had 1 operated on last week

Vision can be affected by high blood glucose as it caused the eye environment to be sugary and the shape of the eye changes so it affects the focus but it usually happens slowly and people adapt but when blood glucose goes down quickly as a result of dietary changes and or medication the eye environment returns to normal salty and the shape changes again, it can be quite disconcerting and it can take a while to settle.

Just to say also that if people are anaemic then the HbA1C test is not all that reliable and another test the fructosamine test would be more appropriate.
Let us know what your other medication is when you get it.

Sorry to hear about the rise in your HbA1c @squidds

Has this happened over a fairly short period of time? It sounds like things may have been changing rapidly. If the additional meds don’t bring about improvements in your glucose levels, ot might perhaps be worth considering getting checked for different types of diabetes, as it is a little unusual for classic T2 to change so rapidly I think?

Sorry to hear about your stroke too - hope you are recovering from that. Illness and injury can raise glucose levels, but it does make me wonder if something else might be going on.

Hope the new meds work well for you. Let us know how things go 🙂

so primarily first discussions about Diabetes and a blood test result of 43 occurred about 18mths ago and was put on Attorvastatin 80mg and metformin 500mg. but as of a few days ago Metformin has been increased to 2g a day and new drug to me Alogliptin 25mg due to blood test HbA1C of 100mmol/mol

Hi @squidds, Although drugs like Atorvastatin (and other stains) and Steroids in particular can raise Blood Glucose, it seems as though something else is going on here because of the very rapid rise in HbA1C (unless that was a false reading due to anemia or something else).

Unless you have substantially increased you consumption of sugars and starches (i.e. carbohydrates) I suggest that you ask your doctor to consider the possibility of adult onset Type 1 diabetes and get blood tests (both blood tests) for that, to either confirm or to rule it out.
