The growing need to care for patients with more than one illness means that doctors need to be trained in broader areas such as children's or women's health, before specialising in one narrow discipline, the Shape of Training report for the UK said.

Under new proposals, junior doctors would become fully registered immediately after completing medical school ? a year earlier than at present ? but would then spend four to six years in broad-based speciality training.

Professional bodies generally welcomed the report, which was commissioned by the Department of Health, but raised concerns about whether it might lead to skills in some highly specialised areas being diluted
