Hi everyone. I am panicking like crazy. I have just had a letter saying I have maculapathy after eye screening, no other detail. I'm supposed to be getting married in 2 years, will I soon go blind? I called the eye screening number and the lady said it wasn't an urgent referral. I'm in bits can anyone advise? Can this be treated or reversed? I'm only 29 diabetic since 14

Have you phoned your GP - or your hospital diabetes team if you have one, for advice? Or - do you have a regular optician - cos he knows more about eyes generally anyway than a GP.
No I hadn't,but on your advice I have just booked an appointment with an optician for tommorow thank you very much.! So frightened I will go blind.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis with maculopathy after your eye screening.
I can imagine how upsetting this news must have been - and from my experience of the ‘background retinopathy’ notification letter I can imagine that the letter wasn’t phrased in the gentlest and kindest way
I hope you find it encouraging that your were told that it wasn’t an urgent referral - hopefully this means that the changes they have spotted are quite early, and they will have treatment they can offer.

Thank you, yes it was worded terribly. It just said I have it and that was that. I phoned the eye screening number and the woman said it wasn't urgent and that often it can have gone away by the time you go to the follow up screening. I am very scared im only 29 I don't want to lose my vision I have an appointment with the optician tommorow.
I had the same letter this year and understand how panicky it could make you. The letter just said maculopathy, which when looked up seems scary. I had an opticians appointment and they couldn't see anything wrong with my macula and my sight hadn't changed greatly.
I have since been screened by the "Surveillance team" and referred to the hospital. I attended that appointment last week and had 40 photographs and scans taken of my eyes that are currently being analysed. The technician was great and said that my maculopathy is background and I probably shouldn't have been referred to the hospital. He said not to panic as it was only minor and would be checked again later in the year. I was advised to keep blood pressure and blood glucose under control and it could well heal its self, no need for treatment at the moment.
I will keep my fingers crossed for you that your outcome is similar.
