Only had my late lunch (corned beef sandwich 2 x rounds bread / soup full can) about 1 hour ago, now my son has arrived home with my tea (chicken nuggets) which i want to eat & use for my tea so i've nothing to cook again later but the question is what do i do about my insulin? I had QA 10u for my lunch injection.

Hi Whiskeysmum, if it was Kate then we would count the carbs and just do an additional bolus for the carbs in the nuggets but she would definitely not do a correction to reflect her blood sugars as there is still so much insulin still working from lunch. This has never caused her any problems but please wait for a few more reponses first to make sure everyone else agrees!!

Whiskeysmum, if you do not count carbs each meal time then obviously this changes things and I would have no idea what to do!

I've tried three times to answer this, but can't think of a good solution! On a pump or with an Accuchek Expert meter you could probably work out what insulin you have 'on board' and it would work out how much extra you would need (I think), but I think that would still leave you short of insulin overall. You might be able to get away with injecting half what you normally would after eating and then testing later on to see if you need a corrrection - the main thing to avoid would be having too much 'active' insulin in you at any time and your late lunch dose will currently be starting to peak.

Thanks for the reply Elaine. How many carbs wold you say roughly for each nugget, there's 9 of them, they're McDonalds.

Thank you for the reply Northerner

I'm not on a pump, just "ordinary" insulin.

for me personally if its within an hour of your 10 units, I would inject at your normal dinner ratio..............

any longer and you may need to consider your on board insulin, working that out manually is for me, usually down by my meter...........

I used to just take a dose with the insulin/carb ratio of 1:1 before I got the meter.....

When are you planning to eat the nuggets? Immediately? Save for later, and eat after microwaving to heat up? The fat in the nuggets will mean that the carbohydrate rate of absorption is slightly slower than if you only have to count the carbohydrate. As others have said, be careful not to "stack" too much insulin on your body so soon after your lunchtime 10 units.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, I got side tracked with tea here, they are probably cold and disgusting by now anyway!! Just in case you are thinking of microwaving and eating later you would need to know your carb:insulin ratio, I notice novorapidboi said he used to 1:1 but Kate's vary between 1:7 and 1:5, she has been on 1:10 at times so I do not think it is something you should guess at, you could well end up with a nasty hypo.
