Who remembers Little Chef? My mum always wanted to eat there when we were out, and where I first had a meal that has become one of my favourite lunches. Guess what I had today!
A handful of baby leaves, a tablespoon of cottage cheese, 12 king prawns and a drizzle of low fat 1000 Islands dressing, served on a side plate. 184 cals and 6.8gm carbs.
My wife and I used to enjoy many a late breakfast at Little Chef in Horton Cross, Somerset, on our way to visit my son in Weymouth. I see that it's become a Burger King and Greggs now. Occasionally we would have an evening meal there if our visit or road conditions had led to a later journey. Good times.
Oh! Memory lane indeed! In the days when our kids were small, and before internet when you couldn’t Google in advance to see where you’d be passing, a Little Chef sign was a godsend. High chairs, loos, nappy changing area, children’s menu, would warm up bottles and your own baby food, and would even provide jars of Heinz baby food.
They were just what was needed for those sort of journeys, but when Heston Blumenthal tried to revamp them it was a disaster as they were then not the sort of eatery that was needed for a quick stop off on non motorway routes.
Before they built even the Newbury bypass where we met the gang from Brum and Cov after getting up at sparrowfart and driving down from Kiddy, as the one we used then was just before the last bit to Studland Bay. We were ready for a decent cup of tea and brekkie by then!
I used to be a big fan of the Olympic Breakfast although I didn't usually eat all the toast. If I remember right the Olympic Committee took them to court over this branding and lost. In the days when I did a lot of company miles they were a godsend. In her latter years my mother suffered with Parkinsons and loved to eat out on a weekend. She usually had an all day breakfast. She felt she was anonymas (not ominous - that was predictive text) there whereas in other restaurants people stared. Sadly missed!
Spent fair amount of time on roads, when transport cafes gradually declined Little Chef cafes were godsend, toilet c**p greasy what wasn't there to like.
Even out on bikes we would end up in one late evenings, some good memories.
