Relationship to Diabetes

Hello,
Not posted for ages, all has been going really well in the last year. Best control I have had in years (or ever probably!) However, I had to go to the hospital last week to get a lump in my breast checked out. They did a mammagram and ultrasound and the doc said the tissue looked normal. The consultant did a biopsy though as he said that diabetics are prone to getting breast lumps - something to do with the fibres thickening or somthing?

Has anyone ever heard of this before, or had any experience of it? I couldnt find a mention of anything similar when I did a search on here. I always think that whatever is wrong with us that the diabetes gets the blame. I was relieved that they dont suspect cancer or anything like that. But he couldnt really explain what it meant if it was caused by the diabetes - so if anyone could shed any light I would be grateful.

He is going to send me a letter next week with the results, so maybe all will become clearer then.

Thanks
H

I have heard of this before - I think there was an article in Balance a few years ago about it.

I had a mammogram and ultrasound a couple of months back. They said the mammogram was fine and they thought before the ultrasound that the lumps were all cysts. I was told that my breasts were difficult as they are so lumpy. Anyway on the ultrasound they found a few fibroadenomas. They did needle biopsies on two which confirmed the diagnosis. I asked whether the lumps could be related to diabetes and was told that they don't see that type of lump very often and that they look different on the ultrasound. I was lucky in that the centre I went to took the samples and gave me the results within an hour.

Hope you get some answers soon.

Well, I don't have breasts, but I did ask my GP about a small lump on the palm of my hand which she said was 'palmar fascitis' and a thickening of the fbres on my palm most probably due to my diabetes. I don't remember it being there prior to my diagnosis so it's either coincidence or really is something else to look out for. She said if it got really bad (which it isn't) then a simplke operation could be performed.

p.s. nice to hear from you and glad to hear that things are going well for you 🙂

Hmmmmm , thats interesting i have had 2 biopsies for breats lumps before and never been told this i wonder why !

Actually you do have breasts - and men can get breast cancer and other breast lumps. There was actually a man at the breast clinic on one occasion when I was there. I felt sorry for him as he was being shuffled from room to room to avoid embarrassing the female patients. I think he should have had an early or late appointment or they should have a separate clinic schedule - so he could have some dignity.

Hi Hev, yes, I've had such a lump. I was quite worried about it till I had a routine scan last year and a biopsy confirmed it was caused by the diabetes. It recurs whenever my numbers are high, like now.

Thanks for your replies.

Margie - thanks for link, that was useful.

Alison - Did your lump just disappear by itself or did you have to get it removed?

My levels have been pretty good lately - so it seems rather unfair to get this now!

Northerner - that is something else that I didnt know. That you can get random lumps anywhere and it is the fault of the D!

Looking forward to getting confirmation from the doc what it is and if anything needs to be done about it.

Cheers guys x

The lump disappeared by itself. It recurs on one side when my numbers get too high, but goes off again when they go down.

Although i didnt start this thread margies link is very interesting as i have been twice about 2 different lumps and had biopsies , the other interesting fact is i have an underactive throid too but this has never been mentioned to me before , you think it would have been
