Hi everyone
Lately i've been suffering from low blood sugars really late at night. Anywhere from 10:30 pm to as early as 2 or 3 in the morning. I haven't been able to figure out why as I always test my sugars before bed and they are usually fine so I don't understand why it keeps dropping hours after I go to bed when all i'm doing is sitting in bed on my laptop. Anyone else having this problem or got any advise?
 
It must be that your background (long acting) insulin is too much. What insulins do you use? I used to have this problem when I was on MDI and it was sorted by splitting my Levemir, thus enabling me to inject less in the evening and more in the morning. Our blood sugars are generally at their lowest around 2-3am, rising by the morning.
 
With me stress etc makes my bg go very down o_O. Good luck Amy

I find my blood sugar starts dropping the minute I get into bed, even if I'm going to read for a bit. Then from 4am, it starts rising, so a trace of my overnight readings looks like a washing line. Short of getting a pump, the only way of managing it that I've found is to balance my basal and my Blood Glucose so that I start high enough at bedtime not to go into hypo territory, and have enough basal insulin on board to stop too much of a rise, then to get some short acting in quick the moment I wake up, so I don't go into double figures. My readings are generally, 7.5-8 at bedtime, 4-5ish in the middle of the night, then 6.5-7.5 when I wake up.
 
Aye Robin, that’s what I aim for with my split of Levemir. Still haven’t got it it perfect, with the occasional hypo in the middle of the night, but getting there. I think the ‘washing line’ is pretty common, but only the Libre and CGM users see it.

... along with the people using Lantus at bedtime who don't realise it peaks after 4-5 hours at more or less exactly the same time as everyone's (ie all humans with or without diabetes) BG is at it's natural lowest.
 
My morning readings are similar to Robin's, and I suspect (from the occasional check if I wake up) that my night-time ones are too, if not lower. If I'm below 8 when I go to bed (which I usually am) I eat some Ryvita or something to get my blood sugar up a bit to try to prevent night-time hypos. Anything from about 5g of carbs to about 15g, depending on how low I am.
