I find it difficult to advise what the best number to go to bed on is as we are all different.
In an ideal world, our basal should keep out levels stable. If that was the case, 8.9 is higher than I would like to maintain. Plus, my body struggles to sleep when my levels are higher than 8.
If your levels are falling more than 5mmol/l per night, that suggests to me that your basal dose is too high.
On the other hand, if you are newly diagnosed and your levels are unpredictable (thanks, dying pancreas), then you may want to be more cautious.
Being on an insulin pump which is able to match my basal needs closer than MDI, I aim to go to bed at about 6 mmol/l which is my target level at all times.
