My daughter is going on a school activity weekend this weekend. She is on MDI and her current dose of levimir is 18 units during term time as she is not by nature an active child. We have found that she can go quite low if she is excited or has a late night but that, for example, her weekly swim at school makes little or no difference to her levels.

Should I decrease the levemir a bit (the trip is only two nights?) as her biggest worry is going low in the night , and if so by how much?

Its her first trip away from home so she is a bit nervous (I'm not of course😉)

I'd leave the levemir as it is. That's because it takes a couple of days for the changes to kick in. Just ask her to test a little more often and treat anything that drops a little bit lower than you'd be happy with as a hypo.

I was taught that Levemir changes can be seen the next day, Lantus however is 3 days......

It all depends on what the activity is like, if its going to be short and intense, a reduction in the previous dose of novorapid and some CARBS at the ready is best.....

If its going to be a full day on consistent intensity then a reduction in the mornings levemir is the more suitable option.....

But its really trial and error............

Try to get more information about activities - an all day hike or half day kayaking / canoeing is very different to an hour-long swimming lesson. I speak from experience, although I'm an adult using Humalin I as my long acting, but spent last Saturday kayaking 11 miles in strong winds on a coastal river, last Sunday leading pond dipping, nature trails and coaching orienteering to primary school age children, and will be either competing in a fell race or walking a long distance in Lake District this Saturday, plus orienteering or fell walking on Sunday. For both weekends, I need to reduce long acting as well as short acting, plus eat a but extra.
