Nurses hit back at Jeremy Hunt’s call to reduce ‘costly errors’ in health service

The NHS could afford to hire more nurses if health service staff made fewer costly errors, according to the health secretary Jeremy Hunt.

Hunt claimed in a speech yesterday (Thursday 16 October) that basic mistakes in hospitals cost the NHS up to £2.5 billion a year, citing an independent report commissioned by the Department of Health (DoH).

His claims have angered staff bodies such as the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), who said mistakes were often due to under-staffed wards.
