In another thread @Toucan asked about a low carb granola so I thought I would put my solution to this conundrum into a separate thread.

I make my own using a bag of rolled oats, a bag of mixed nuts and a bag of mixed seeds. The oats I get from Booths (750g bag) and the nuts and seeds from Aldi who do those things in reasonably sized bags - can't remember the weight of them. Method is very simple. Empty the bag of oats onto as big a roasting tray as you can find - something that just fits into the oven would be great. Chop up the nuts and add to the oats. Sprinkle with veg oil of choice and mix the whole lot up. Spread it around your tray and put it into the oven at about 180C. I put it at the bottom of the oven whilst cooking something else. Keep your eye on it, and periodically give it a stir so that everything gets toasted. When everything looks toasted (don't worry about getting it perfect!) take it out of the oven and leave it to cool. Mix in the seeds and put it in a cereal container, ready to eat. I have three dessert spoons of the mix with a decent dollop of yoghourt and a drop of milk for my breakfast. One mix lasts about three weeks. Nice mix of subtle flavours - particularly the toasted nuts - and perfect if you don't have, or have cured, your sweet tooth.

I reckon that the carbs from the oats in a batch amount to 400g at most. Lasts about 20 breakfasts, so around 20g carb per portion. Add a slice of Booths Low GI bread (10 g carb) and I have my target meal of around 30g carbs. More importantly, testing has shown it does not spike me in the way that the commercial cereals I used to eat. Last point, I tried adding a few blueberries but although it added to the flavour combination it also stuck a couple of mmol/l on my BG so gave that up.

Great that you make your own ...... but for those of us who want a quick and easy solution, Eat Natural do a Low carb granola which is 34g carbs per 100g and tastes good. I have 40g with half a dozen rasps and a dessert spoon of mixed seeds (from Lidl) and two good dollops (don't you just love the word dollop!) of creamy Greek natural yoghurt (also from Lidl) and it works out about 20g carbs.

This Eat Natural Granola is almost half the carbs of every other granola I have looked at and I have looked at very many, so a significant improvement on other options available off the shelf.

Lizi's granola is only 45 - 46g per 100g, and I prefer this. Eat Natural no longer available for me online from Tesco.
I don't eat it often - very expensive! - but a sprinkle on top of yogurt and berries is a good treat.

Booths?? They used to make gin, but it was nasty pale yellow 'oily' sort of stuff. Yuk. Anyway I haven't seen any for donkeys years and if Booths is a local shop for some it isn't a national chain, cos I've never seen a Booths shop.

You don't live far enough north if you have never seen a Booths, TW. Started in Preston in what is now Waterstones but now have Branches all over the Northwest. Think Waitrose but without the bullpooh.

I found it was no longer available online at Tesco so have been going to Waitrose to get it but tried to do a click and collect at a different Tesco’s yesterday and it was available so guessing only certain stores hold it

I guess so - but we have no click and collect within a reasonable distance. I have a good stock of lizi's bought when on offer, and only have occasionally, so not a problem! But thanks for the suggestion. 🙂

Only ever lived in the West Midlands and worked as far north as Newcastle under Lyme for a few years whilst living in Kidderminster. One grandchild currently in Sheffield with 2 of our great grandchildren (the youngest of whom we've never even cuddled as yet!) though looks like they could be moving south to Nottingham some time soon.

Waitrose was THE only supermarket when I married and went to live in Kiddy in 1971. Why Kiddy? - because we could afford a house there and couldn't anywhere around West Bromwich/Great Barr hence the choice was Cannock/Hednesford or Kiddy at the time, we preferred the surroundings in Worcestershire, the travelling to both jobs in Brum was readily available so it won no contest!

What's not to like with the W.Mids Safari Park literally round one corner and the river and Bewdley/Stourport both 3 miles away?

Many thanks @Docb, the recipe looks good and I will give it a try.
I'm a bit concerned that the oat content may be a little high for me as I don't usually re-act well to them. I haven't tried them for a while though and I know that re-actions can vary over time.
Anyway I'm sure my husband will eat them, and it will be considerably better from him than the sugary stuff he usually buys.

Just looked up the seeds and nuts and find that they come in 200g packs so my version is 750g oats to 400g other stuff, which I can cope with by regulating portion size and adding the yoghourt. No reason why you could not reduce the oat content and make it nuttier and seedier. Have fun experimenting and feed your husband stuff that does not work for you!

I get one from Sainsbury’s by ‘The paleo food company’ it’s not really a granola as it’s just nuts and seeds and is quite pricey but has just 6.8g carbs per 40g portion, I just use it as sprinkles though in about 20g portions and it’s really delicious on yoghurt 🙂
