Type 2
Hi my name is Val I am 66years old and have been type 2 diabetic for a number of years, treated by medication. 3 weeks ago I was put on Humulin Kwick pen for what I am on 18 before evening meal plus metformin. However since starting this I have not been feeling well, I have had a serious eye infection back, which has been treated. I have been feeling tired and light headed and faint. Went to drs who said nothing to do with being on Humulin, just happened at same time. Last week nearly fainted when out glucose readings are fine but took BP which showed very low 105/48 p 70, I have always suffered very high Bp for what I take a 6 tablets a day. Spoke to GP who has reduced BP meds, says it is nothing to do with Himulin. Can anyone please tell me if they have had reduced BP readings with Humulin or other types, not sure why I feel like this but was fine on tablets alone. Many thanks.

Welcome @Sav 🙂 In people with Type 2, insulin can sometimes have a small blood pressure lowering effect. Here:

And here:

As your blood pressure meds have been lowered, hopefully this will sort it. Do test your blood glucose when you feel faint though just in case it’s a hypo.

Thank you so much for this, it just seemed a bad coincidence that that for over 30 years I have had really high blood pressure and since starting the injections, have not felt right with my BP being so low, even though to Drs siad it had nothing to do with the injection, never had trouble with being just on tablets.

I am wondering if the high BG levels you likely had before starting insulin were causing the high BP and when the insulin brought down your BG, your BP also dropped because you were then over medicated for BP. So the insulin didn't specifically cause your BP to drop but lowered your BG and that resulted in your BP dropping. In a similar way, following a low carb way of eating can cause people who are diabetic and on medication for high BP to suffer from low BP events.

Thank you will talk to GP next week, have not been diabetic for more than 10 years, DR suggested trying injection as well as metformin to try and lower it, seeing Endocrinoligist in January as out of 7 blood tests 6 were abnormal, but have had high BP for years.

Hopefully your doctors can sort it out for you.
On the low carb list I have been on for ages now there have been several incidents where people have continued to take tablets for high blood pressure when they have altered their diet, and there have been some bad falls, one of them causing permanent damage. Of course their situation is entirely different to yours with regard to the diabetes, but it does indicate that high blood pressure is by no means a permanent fixture and should not mean a fixed medication for life.

Hope your appointment goes well @Sav, and your meds can get tweaked to suit you better.

Have your BG levels dropped from a higher average to being more in-range over a fairly short period? Sometimes that can bring on early hypo symptoms such as fatigue, fuzzy-headedness and feeling a bit tingly / wobbly, because the body isn’t used to running 4-8ish and the contrast with the higher levels triggers false hypo warning signs until the internal ‘glucose thermostat’ resets.

Let us know how things go.

GP is keeping me on low BP meds for now as BP is very low at times, so I feel faint (not sugar related) GP says it is nothing to do with the insulin, I just feel that it is odd that it has gone really low since being on insulin and not just tablets.

When you say your GP is keeping you on "low BP meds", do you mean a low dose of meds for high BP or medication to increase your BP because it is now too low? As I understood it you were on medication to treat high BP before, so I am guessing you just mean a reduced dose of those?.
