Hi all I am new and have a question. my hubby has Type2 diabetes, he was confirmed as diabetic 3 years ago and first started on Metformin, now he takes Glicazide and Actos, 4 Metformin, 4 Glicazide and 1 Actos a day plus BP tablets and statins, for the past week he has been going odd and his blood sugars have been 3.1 approx, the tablets have suddenly started really upsetting his stomach, he is fine in a morning, has breakfast and takes his tablets, 45 mins later he has stomach pains and feels extremely sick and ill.

He has eaten but his sugars are still below 5

Anyone got any ideas why his tablets should be affecting him so much and why his sugars are low when in the past they have always been high

Thought I would ask here first as the GP isnt open till Monday

Thanks

Welcome, Magnolia and hubby.
Not sure where you live, but when GPs are unavailable, there should still be an out of hours service. Also NHS Direct in England 0845 46 47 http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/ or equivalents in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. I recommend phoning, as soon as possible, then getting GP on Monday.

Some tablets do make you feel sick and upset the tummy, so read the leaflets that come with the boxes of tablets. Also agree phone out of hours doctor or NHS direct for advice, or sometimes the local pharmacist if he's open can help.

Also welcome to you and hubby to the forum, I hope we can help.

Thank you I think I will ring NHS Direct, they upped his tablets about 6 months ago and he suddenly seems to have a horrid reaction to them...what a christmas lol

Hi and Welcome! From my days when I was involved in running a support group your husband sounds over-medicated as he is taking quite an array of BG lowering tablets. Hopefully NHS Direct can help. Take him to see his GP first thing Monday. If the GP is not a diabetes specialist (many think they are when they are not) he sould ask to see a consultant to review his medication. It may be that either insulin or byetta is more appropriate. Lets us know how it goes.

Yes I think he is taking too much medication, the nurse at the GP practice just keeps throwing extra tablets in, he has never seen a diabetes specialist so I think perhaps now is the time we should push for it, these are the tablets he takes a day

MORNING
2 Metformin
2 Glicazide
1 Actos (thats the new one)
1 Ezetrol (statin)
1 Ramipril(Bp)
1 Amlodipine (Bp)
1 Lansoprazole (stomach one)

EVENING
2 Metformin
2 Glicazide
1 Simvastin (statin)

Then 3 times a day 1 Diclofenac and 2 paracetamol for chronic back pain

All that medication fighting against each other cant be good

WoW! that is quiet a cocktail.
From what I have read about Actos it can cause alot of side effects including stomach pains and nausea and as it has recently been added to your husbands medication, seems that it is the most likely culprit.

All the best and hope you get it all sorted as soon as possible.

Just looked up the side effects and Sinus problems are a big side effect, since starting to take Actos hubbys sinus have been blocked and he has had a lot of nose bleeds.
