Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
hi...in need of advice....
my husband has diabetes 2, he seems to sleep for 20 hours plus sometimes ( he can also work for 20 hours, ( has addictive personality)....when i moan about it he says its all part of the diabetes...
also he doesnt eat regularly and only takes metformin when he does eat...but says that makes him sleepy and feel sick........should i stop moaning????? x

Hi Alison, we all react differently to diabetes so it wouldn’t be fair for me to comment on your husband. What I would say is for you to read up as much as you can here so you get a better understanding of how others have experienced it.
Personally it’s the best thing that could have happened to me, a kick up the backside to change my eating habits, get off the couch and start living a life o_O

Hello Alison and welcome🙂

Metformin is supposed to be taken regularly as it helps the body deal with glucose more efficiently in a few ways. It reduces glucose production from the liver and helps the body become more sensitive to the insulin the pancreas is producing. Taking it periodically with a meal isn't going to get the body better adjusted to dealing with glucose. If Metformin is causing nausea there is an extended release form which should be more gentle on his stomach.

Does your Husband test his blood sugar to see what effect food is having on his blood sugar levels or do you know what his last HbA1c test result was - (average blood glucose over approx 3 months)? Tiredness and overwhelming fatigue can be a sign of high blood sugar but that may not be the case as you say he can also work for 20 hours. Controlled diabetes shouldn't be causing prolonged tiredness.

Does he see a Diabetes Nurse at a gp surgery for a review? Have they given him any advice?

Hello Alison welcome to the forum.🙂 I have to agree with @CathyB we all react differently a little bit more info would help, is he testing his blood sugar levels? As @Flower has just posted I`ll leave you to read the post, don`t be afraid to ask questions as @CathyB also says we would be lost without the forum.

Hi....thank you for your advice....
My husband did get help via an online service. but that was only for a few weeks, he doesn't get bloods etc checked from what I believe...
I have shown him the replies, and hopefully he will go back to our gp....

Thankyou again, these forums are such a help x

The sickness could be from the Metformin, but the usual reason for a type two being sleepy after meals is due to too many carbs resulting in elevated blood glucose and that is bad news.
Not testing but waiting for a Hba1c test is like driving without looking at the speedometer and waiting for the fines to show if you are going too fast.
