EDMONTON - High rates of diabetes among aboriginal communities can be strongly linked to declining knowledge of indigenous languages, a new University of Alberta study has found.

The two-year research project, published recently in the International Journal for Equity in Health, is the first of its kind to establish a direct connection between the loss of culture and physical health, the study’s authors say.

“This idea of culture has come up time and time again as something that might be protective. However there is really no empirical evidence of that in the literature, so we’d thought we’d do that to see if there is a scientific connection between cultural continuity in First Nations communities and diabetes rates,” said lead author Richard Oster, senior research co-ordinator with the U of A’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.
