Relationship to Diabetes
Hello, just looking for some helps my friend was diagnosed with Type 2 exactly a year ago and has undergone an amazing transformation through exercise and diet. We were all so proud of her, but now the weight loss is continuing and she is very thin and doesn't seem sure what to eat, and we think is afraid to put on weight. How can we help her, any ideas on diet etc.?

Hi, welcome to the forum 🙂 I suppose a lot will depend on the kind of diet and exercise regime she has been following until now before it's possible to suggest what adjustments might be made. Is she on any medication for her diabetes? Has her diet been calorie controlled, or has it focused on other things, e.g. low carb/low fat/cabbage soup etc. It's understandable that she does not want to go back to how she was, but with the right balance of food and exercise she should be able to strike a happy medium.

As suggested, a referral to a dietician might be helpful, as long as the dietician is a good one who doesn't try to apply generalities to her, but looks at her personal needs and preferences 🙂

Every reason to be proud.
You could support her with information about healthy eating for diabetics, such as, http://www.diabetes.org.uk/Guide-to-diabetes/Managing-your-diabetes/Healthy-eating/

Thank you

Thank you for all the replies, You are right that she should talk to a good dietician, is there a difference between a Nutritionist and Dietician? Her diet wasn't calorie controlled, just changing what she ate, taking up walking everyday. Metformin was the medication and they have cut it by half, because of her weight loss. I really do think she is really afraid she will put on too much weight.

It's not unusual for someone who has lost weight to fear "loosening the reigns" a little, because generally the control has been hard won, and the only other template they have for eating is the one that made or kept them overweight (in their mind at least). Does she think she needs to stop losing weight? Or does she think she still needs to lose a bit more? The added complication of diabetes is carbs are tricky blood sugar wise, so that might make it more complex for her to know what she can eat. I'd encourage her to try relaxing control a bit at a time, by adding in a few foods she's been missing, taking stock of blood sugars and monitoring her weight so she gradually learns how to eat to maintain rather than lose weight. A dietician might be really useful in that regard. It's about learning what the right amount and type of food is all over again. She deserves a big cheer though for turning her life around, brilliant work 🙂
