loosing weight

I was diagnosed with type 2 in september and have since been eating a lower carb and sugar diet, however I also have familiar cholesterol so was already eating a low fat diet + IBS which restricts increase in roughage and veg. I am 5ft 2 and was 52.4 kg I am now 98.4 and I cannot really continue to loose weight at this rate. What can I eat that is low in fat and sugar but will give me calories, I am not hungry and am active walking up to 6 miles a day, dog. I looked at the diet suggestions at the beginning of this website and that is how I have eaten for the past 30 years since being diagnosed with the cholesterol problem.
 
Welcome @PAG25 🙂 Are you on any medication for the diabetes? Can you give us an idea of an average day’s food for you? Does your special diet allow any healthy fats like oily fish, nuts and avocado?
 
Also, are you on a statin to manage your familial high cholesterol? If so, then I think it would be reasonable to increase your fat intake. Nuts and nut butters are a good way of increasing calories and are healthy fats.
 
Yes I am on statins but even with those and careful eating I cannot get my cholesterol below 6. I eat advocardo every day instead of butter on my lunch time pitta, and cashew butter on the odd slice of toast, about once a week. I am not on medication for the diabetes yet, only 49.9 and my diabetic nurse said it causes weight loss as well. Talking of that I made a typo my weight is now 48.4. in old terms I have gone for 8st to 71/2st. I do have some nuts as my 4 o clock snack. daily diet wholemeal cereal, 2 wheetabix, 200ml of milk and an inch of banana. lunch pitta with advocardo and chicken or pastrami, salad with low fat natural cottage cheese, 3 small cheese biscuits and a no added fat or sugar fruit yoghurt, finish banana, nuts afternoon snack, tea homemade standard meals, shepherds pie, sausage egg and chips, pasta, home made pie and pots, in all meals |I have halved the amount of carbs and I think that is the cause of the weight loss, afters fruit and no fat quark. I could put in oily fish at lunch but not tea, neither husband nor autistic son like it. Thanks

If you HbA1C is still only at 50 mmol//mol with what is actually quite a high carb diet then that is not too bad and you could probably drop it down a bit with less carbs but you have to offset that against maintaining your weight. What about having eggs, they are low carb and there are some fats which help reduce the 'bad' cholesterol and increase the 'good'
I wonder if there is some other cause of the weight loss.
 
Yes i could add eggs we have chickens. I am also very active walking between 4 and 6 miles each day {dog, chickens 1/4 acre garden} as well as yoga, pilates and stretch classes. Had a full MOT due to other issues in september and that is when the diabetes was flagged up.

As I have not had IBS, I googled 'Harcombe IBS' in case Zoe Harcombe has written anything about it.

My GP suggested food combining as a way of treating my IBS, with the proviso that it doesn't work for everyone. It's eating foods together that are easy to digest; fruit before or between meals and a reset with primarily starchy carbs/veg or protein/veg.

On his recommendation and advice I bought the book 'The Harcombe Diet', ignored the first part and went straight to the eating plan. In less than 2 weeks I saw a massive improvement. Even now, I rarely get a flare-up, and if I do it's not with the severe pain or frequent trips to the loo that I had in the early days.

I work full-time, travel and exercise with it.


As it happens I have a copy of The Harcombe Diet 3-Step Plan (follow link to buy a copy from £3.33). It says if you have IBS. 'you will likely benefit from avoiding wheat.... Phase 2 menu plans ensure you avoid wheat'.

I'm a smaller person myself, with a "fighting weight" of +/- 48.5kg.

If my weight drops, the first thing I do is up my protein intake - partly because it keeps me nicely full, but I also want to ensure it my weight is low that I'm not unduly losing muscle.

Maybe you could consider a protein based breakfast - eggs, bacon, decent sausages? Not necessarily all, but one or more of those things and vary it a bit?
 
Gosh with familial high cholesterol, IBS and diabetes, you really are being backed into a corner menu-wise aren’t you :(

Good to hear you are able to eat avocado. Oily fish sounded like a good option too. Plus adding olive oil to things maybe? High in monounsaturated oils which go ‘straight through’.

If you are watching carbs because of diabetes, and fat because of cholesterol, protein does seem like a helpful go-to for additional calories, but I think you need to be slightly careful not to imbalance things too much in case your kidneys get negatively affected by having too much protein?
