I wrote a couple of days ago to say that my bs seems to have levelled without the use of insulin which I needed following diagnosis in may.

Before my diagnosis I lost a lot of weight but seemed to start gaining a healthy weight again with the use of insulin. After being on insulin since May I noticed increases in hypo which lead me to reduce the injection until I stopped just over a week ago.

My bs has been a really good levels over the last week but I noticed the weight has dropped of me again

I am eating well, and keytones have been low although I measured in the middle of the night and they were at 0.2 and then 0.1 when I measure 5 min later. I ate a large plate of chilli con carni and rice in the evening as well.

I am not sure if this is my body adjusting to not using insulin, but am worried that I am loosing weight without keytones

Doctors are not open until tomorrow and spent all night awake worrying.

Andrew, I would not worry unduly about this. As you suggest, I imagine this is just down to your body adjusting to the 'normal' levels of insulin being produced by your pancreas in response to glucose levels. Injecting is a bit crude in comparison (to say the least!), and as insulin is a growth hormone any excess would be utilised to store glucose as fat. The endocrine system is very finely-tuned, so large changes such as those you have undergone in the past few months I would imagine would have quite an impact. A small level of ketosis is perfectly fine if you are not experiencing high levels or injecting any insulin - it's just your body using fat stores for extra energy.

How much weight are you losing and what is your current BMIlike in comparison to your normal expectations i.e. what you used to be like long before diagnosis, not immediately before?

Thanks northerner.

I was about 13 st when normal but have not weighed myself to see the change. I can just see that my arms and legs and lower abdomen are looking thin and I can feel the tightness in my skin.

Was not helped by some helpful idiot at work telling me I looked like a skeleton walking towards him

Your probably right but just wondering if I should take small dose of insuline even though by bs seems to start at 6.4 in the morning and then drop to about 5.6 during other fasting periods during the day even without insulin.

I am sure 1unit of novo rapid would not take me too low and might stabilise the weight.

I'd be inclined to wait it out and see how things go. Ignore your work colleague, I am sure it was a gross exaggeration! By all means discuss it with your doctor though as he will be able to do a proper assessment and compare your health and weight now with past records. 🙂
