Had my appointment today with the dietitian and my DSN and it went really well 🙂
First they were both really impressed at the fact i had read alot about it by myself and i had started to join forums and sign up for stuff, even more impressed when i told them i was taking my insulin using a carb to insulin ratio, and adjusting my levemir doses myself and splitting it (i have u guys to thank for all this) 🙂

Talked about carbohydrate counting and she has put me on a course which will start early february next year, we also talked about the fact i am probably honeymooning and the reasons i have been going low the past few weeks, and as a result have changed my carb to insulin ratio to 1:20. did some test sheets with various food on where i had to estimate the carbs and write down how much i should inject. looked at my food/glucose diary to work out what my ratio should be however she struggled due to my lack of carb intake and was not too impressed by this oops...so i now have to eat 30g of carbs with every meal so i am getting insulin regularly and so they have some numbers to work with! I have to keep a detailed food diary for a week and send it to them as well.

Talked about exercise and how much insulin to reduce by when going to the gym, and what levels i should be at when i start etc..

I also asked them about the pen which gives half units, and they agreed it was a fab idea so they gave me one of them along with a prescription that had all the stuff i needed to get started straight away!

Not only that but i have come away with a new shiny pink one touch meter FREE and when they get some on the bayer contours in, i may get one of those for free too :D so have just been to the pharrmacy and got al my insulin cartridges, strips, lancets ect...and am all ready to go this makes such a change from my mood i was in yesterday!

Brilliant, glad it was such a productive meeting. I think being able to show that you're being proactive and willing to learn does pay off, if you can show that you're motivated there tends to be a lot more support coming the other way!
Is it the pink onetouch ultra easy? I love mine!!

Great stuff DG! February sounds like a long way off for the course though! But great that everything else went so well. 🙂

That's sound's like an extremely sucessful appointment. Your dsn sound very helpful and supportive. I'm glad you managed to get the new pen and that you'll be doing a course the start of next year. Is that the earliest they could put you on one? I had to wait a year also to get onto a course which seemed to take forever but it was worth the wait in the end 🙂

I love the sound of your new meter 😉 anything to brighten up testing sound's good to me.

xx

Yea it is aymes and i love it too!! - much slimmer than my accucheck and will be easier to take it with me when i go out! though i have found my old finger pricker better 🙂

I asked if i could be put on the course any sooner but she said they generally dont book you on for a year as this gives time for the honeymoon stage to pass.

Its funny how a good appointment can life ur mood a little 🙂

glad the appointment went well, it sounds like you got lots of brownie points too. Is it the DAFNE course that you are doing in February?

wowser sounds like a most positive of meetings, hope things continue to be on the up! :D

Do they have a basic carb counting course you could go to in the meantime?

Na they took me through some basics at the last meeting and since then with the help of this forum i have learned to do it myself 🙂 have many books too x

You should be really proud of yourself for doing so much for yourself. Thank goodness for places like this too.

Nice to hear of an appointment going well for a change! All sounds very positive and well done to you for the effort you have obviously put in 🙂

D-G,
You've changed your name? Anyway, fab news. Nice to hear an appointment going well.

I always hope for the same and agree, if it goes badly or there are concerns, it can really affect your mood for some time - especially if your next appointment isn't for 12 months.

Nice to here you appointment went well , good going x

Yea changed name i dint like the D word any more lol, plus everyone seemed to refer to me as DG so thought it would be easier 🙂 yea it just goes to show how a good app can turn your mood around! should you not be seen sooner than 12 months???

Thanks everyone im so glad i got so much out of this appointment and finding the 30-40g carbs at each meal realy good! i am full up more and so not snaking lots as i used to, helps drop a few pounds 🙂 x

should you not be seen sooner than 12 months???

I only get to see my diabetes specialist doctor once a year, unless there are specific issues i need to talk about more often. I suppose it's either a compliment regarding my control( i hope) or the fact they don't have time to see me more frequently.
I like to believe it's the first one.🙂

Ah i see well i hope its because of your control and not the other one! but thats good that you can see them if you have major issues 🙂
