I was diagnosed a few years ago and did great while I was having a checkup every 6 months. I lost weights, all my figures came back as hoped, and got to the point where I was more pre-diabetic than fully. Then my next checkup was cancelled due to Covid and after that I just lost the same will. Finally went back to the clinic. Had only put on 6 pounds in 18 months, but my blood sugars were high again. Having trouble adjusting for various reasons which are really excuses. They doubled my Metformin but I couldn't tolerate it, so now they're trying me on slow release. Feels like an uphill fight again, but I've done it before and I just need to find that willpower again hopefully.
Welcome @TonyJF🙂 As you rightly say, you’ve done it once so you know you can do it again. I think Covid and the lockdowns have caused stress for lots of people so you’re not alone. Do you know what your latest HbA1C was?
Good luck - and ask any questions you want here 🙂 We have many Type 2 members following a variety of diets here and I’m sure there’ll be members that are following a diet that works for you.
It is difficult but you can turn back the clock. You might need to dig deep to find your mojo but we're all here to help and encourage you. Best wishes!
Hi @TonyJF and welcome to the forum.
Did you need lots of will power to lower your BG? The problem with will power it that it is finite - it always runs out eventually because we are human beings not robots. So don't feel bad, just try to find a way which relies less on will power and more on enjoying your life.
For me that method was Low Carb - eating foods I like in quantities I like while keeping the carbohydrates low enough to keep my BG after meals to 8.0 mmol or lower and my BG rise from just before a meal to 2hrs later, to 2.0 mmol or lower.
I call it 'eating to my meter'. Anybody counting the calories I eat would say I'm still over-eating, but I only over-eat on foods that don't hurt my BG. So although I'm 5lbs heavier than I was at my last HbA1C (which was 37) I'm still have a BMI of 23 - I was always slim until T2Ddiagnosis by which time I was a whopping 2lbs into the BMI of 25.
Sorry to hear about the effect that lockdown has had on your diabetes management. As @Inka says - you are not the only one to have experienced this, so don’t be too hard on yourself.
The great news is that you know you have has success in the past, and know the strategies that have worked for you before.
Hope you get on well with the SR metformin, and find the encouragement of sharing your experiences on the forum helpful.
Some have used the forum to document their attempts to refocus on their diabetes management or weight loss, to provide some of that ‘accountability’ that the regular appointments gave you.
Others find a daily ‘check-in‘ on the Waking Average thread helps to keep diabetes front-of-mind and to feel supported through any wobbles.
Same happened to me, plus a nasty 4 month lasting infection. I have been slowly reducing numbers since July and hope my HbA1c and cholesterol next week will also have fallen. My BP is back down to acceptable levels at least. So some of us seem to have struggled in lockdown. Wishing you, and everyone else with the same issue, lots of success

Thank you - I don't know the result of my most recent tests precisely, only that it had worsened. The first thing I have to do is cut out all the c**p I've been eating and drinking, and go back to a weekend 'treat'. Last time I followed a 4/3 then 5/2 and finally a 6/1 strategy so that I weaned myself off the bad stuff gradually. It worked well, so I'll begin with what I know works - or worked, at least - for me. Then I'll move on to making a few dietary changes such as cutting back on carbs.
