Hi All,
Convinced I am type 2 now, though not officially with Doctor.

Back last November my Dr phoned because my A1c level test showed 7.8 %. (should be 6.5 max I think). He read a list of symptoms - I didn't have any - so he told me to lose weight and see the Nurse.

On reflection I realised I had been having symptoms (thirst) but saw the Nurse, took my diet in hand and tested 5.8% in Feb.

But then I got an intestinal problem that changed my diet temporarily and then I got a bit lazy and have been hitting the crisps and chocolate for a few weeks.

So now my BG is suffering. Thirst back, feeling ill for an hour after eating my fish and couscous last night. Waking up this morning after 3 hours sleep with a BG of 7.1 - then 8.2 after another hour or so of sleep. My range during the day is now probably 4.5 - 11 but I need a better testing regimen I think.

Just not sure whether to contact the Doctor straight away (and probably start meds) or to see if I can get back on track with diet alone. I guess my symptoms are mild compared to what most of you face - but, still, it's a concern.

Hi @DaveE it may be a good start to measure your blood glucose levels initially with a meter which you get for as little as £15 on the internet and at the same time definitely make an appointment with the GP. You can then at least go armed with some readings to support what you are telling him. Good idea to monitor at wake up, 2 hours after breakfast and same after lunch / dinner. Just write down what you see and make a note of what you eat. Good luck

Thanks - I am taking readings now - probably too many! But at least I'll get an idea of how high I'm going after food. This downturn seems very sudden.

Hi DaveE, welcome to the forum.

I agree that it's best to get checked out as soon as you can so you can figure out what's going on. There could be a number of reasons for the way you feel so it's best to have confirmation following the correct tests and assessments.

Do let us know how you get on.

You previously had made some dietary changes which worked well and got you back into normal range so there is no good reason why you cannot get back on track.
You have your monitor so you can do some strategic testing of your blood glucose to see if your meals are being tolerated or if you are now having too many carbs in your meal. Test before you eat and after 2 hours, ideally you should see no more than a 2-3mmol/l increase or not be more than 8-8.5mmol/l.
It could be that things have just slipped a bit diet wise, but keeping a good record of your readings and what you are eating and drinking will be useful to show your GP as it may be wise to get checked out and ask for another HbA1C test so you know where you are.

Thankyou - I do feel a little better tonight and my readings are more tolerable. It's almost as if I can tell without actually doing a test. Anyway I feel more confident about the rest of the weekend so I'll review next week. I can see I need to be more rigorous in my testing and how it relates to what I eat. Looking at posts here it seems which particular carbs cause a problem differs from person to person. So I need to be more rigorous and careful.

If you cut out the extras you added to your diet recently @DaveE you might find you go back to how you were when you had your HbA1C in February. You do seem to have found a possible reason for the way you’re feeling (your recent diet).

The blood glucose meter will give you an idea of how you react to foods but they’re not for diagnostic purposes. For that you’d need another HbA1C.
