Some of us may not be using our cars, as we once did - Having them sitting idle for a long period could cause problems. Here is a link from the AA website, (other sites are available!) for info/advice which may keep our vehicles in good condition.

Ours hasn’t been used for 10 days. About the same as if we’d left it at an airport carpark. Mr Eggy looks at it forlornly every day. It’s a bit dusty but I won’t let him wash it as it’s parked on the kerbside and it doesn’t seem like a necessary task.

OH washed our car today, in the sure and certain knowledge that it will stay clean for a while. I normally muddy it up thoroughly every Sunday, driving to the riding stables down rural lanes, but that’s not going to be happening for a while.

I read somewhere that the six month government MOT extension is not being recognised by some insurance companies. Worth checking up if your not sure about your cover.

Thank you for that @Tee G It hadn’t even occurred to me to think about my car. About to read the link now 🙂

My mechanic suggested not leaving the car for the full 6 months extension if at all possible as everyone else will have the same idea thus no spaces for MOT's to be done.

My car's MOT was due to be done on the 6th of April. My fabulous mechanic is a very small business so have suggested if he is still allowed to open he can still collect the car as arranged and give it a good service so his money is still coming in, then MOT it at a later date to suit himself.

Good tip @Tee G, thanks. I will be driving to the supermarket to limit pavement time (I usually walk) more often than I usually do, so ours will get a short jaunt every so often.

Garages and MOT centres are still open at the moment. They are on the same list as food shops.

Yeah @everydayupsanddowns - i found it really surprising the great tips and education that link gave me, I just had to share it. I never realised potential issues arising with things like the handbrake or the petrol tank - very informative!. And after all our cars are often one of our larger expenses, makes sense to look after it!

Mr G walks to the corner shop (exercise/staples) - he wont let me step foot outside, bless him, being a bit precious with me he is! LOL

So why have MOT's been deferred for 6 months?

Think that’s to help social distancing. To be honest I know that garages/MOT places are open as a friend was checking if they should be... but I don’t know if they are only open to service/repair vehicles.

Our MOT isn’t due, so I havent checked! (Your signature seems appropriate here, ‘some of the answers are... including mine’ 🙂 )
