Hi all, I'm off on my holidays tomorrow, off to st bees in Cumbria. It's around a 5 hour journey from me. Was just wondering do I have to schedule a stop every 2 hours or can my girlfriend in theory scan my libre for me ? Thanks in advance.

The guidance isn’t completely clear on this, it does say you should stop but more in the context of not actively using a device whilst driving:

If you are using a glucose monitoring system (RT-CGM or FlashGM) you must not actively use this whilst driving your vehicle. You must pull over in a safe location before checking your device.

Personally I would always stop before 2 hours are up, to allow for potential traffic jams etc, so for a 5 hour journey I would schedule 2 stops, probably after 1hr45 ish each. I think this is good practice even for those without diabetes, even a 5 minute break can help with giving yourself a short rest and maintaining concentration.

Ok thank you for your your reply and advice. Much appreciated.

From a lawyer's point of view, you must check every two hours, but what if you had dropped under 4? If you are driving along when you discover this, because your partner has swiped for you, you would technically be driving illegally as from the moment you discovered this, until you could safely pull over. (Though if you were still driving and you’d dropped under 4, it could be argued that your hypo awareness was questionable!)
Legal nit-picking aside, we always aim to stop and have a coffee, loo stop, and swap drivers every two hours, just for the safety of being refreshed.

I regularly do a journey to Cumbria, by myself, that is somewhere between 6hr0-6hr30 on a clear run, with nowhere to stop easily for the last half hour (would have to stop in a gateway to a farm or somewhere if hypo type situation). That third stop before i leave the motorway, when I’m barely going to go over the 2hr limit, always feels a bit frustrating but at least means no worries about how I would justify my actions if anything happened. It’s nice that it means I arrive feeling refreshed after only a half hour stint for the last bit though and not bursting for the loo with stiff legs or anything!

Hi there, yeah that's a great point I hadn't thought of that will just stop before the 2 hour mark to be safe. Thanks again guys.

Yeah what Robin said, we're on holiday from the moment we shut the front door and hence like to enjoy the journey. Set out very early morning then first stop would be for breakfast and toilet, and a walk round the carpark of wherever if it's motorway, and nowhere else to have a walk - to make sure you all (your body and circulation etc) still work properly and get rid of cramps and achey bits. Then plough on, lunch & loo etc. remember coming back from deepest France in convoy with 3 children in two of the 3 cars and me telling them both which motorway 'aire' we absolutely MUST stop at however much they needed the loo before we got there - just plait your legs then.

I happened to know there was at that time a (free!) zipwire at this stop (cos I read all sorts of things when we're going somewhere) - so they did all thank me in the finish! (think it was only me who declined to try it)
