The largest ever international study of people with long Covid has identified more than 200 symptoms and prompted researchers to call for a national screening programme.

The study found the myriad symptoms of long Covid – from brain fog and hallucinations to tremors and tinnitus – spanned 10 of the body’s organ systems, and a third of the symptoms continued to affect patients for at least six months.

A national screening programme would help produce a better understanding of how many people are affected and the kind of support they would need, the researchers said.

The researchers also called for the clinical guidelines for assessing patients with suspected long Covid to be widened beyond cardiovascular and lung-function tests.

No illness in the world has 200 symptoms. This seems to be a bit like diabetes - once diagnosed, whatever you get is "that'll be the diabetes". And that is how many people with perfectly treatable conditions with the right therapy can miss being cured or alleviated, because they are "Long Covid". Including, I dare say, T2 diabetes, which shares (undiagnosed) fatigue and lethargy with Long Covid.

Long covid is an umbrella term and covers many different facets of post viral illness common to other viruses as well as specific symptoms that are unique to post covid illnesses so it doesn’t surprise me that the symptoms are a long list. It’s good for there to be research and that will hopefully help other post viral and auto immune conditions too.

And masks /face coverings will do nothing to prevent any of those 200 symptoms.

Except maybe for the indeterminate number who did not catch it because they or somebody else was wearing a mask.
