Still quite new to all this diabetes stuff (as some of you know).

Been on metformin 500x2 and gliclazide 80x1 for about a month now.

using the app that connects to my blood glucose monitor it says my 14 day average is 8.6, 8.6 before meal, 8.9 after. standard deviation 1.6.

now I know what the numbers mean as presented but what do they mean in real terms? ive cut carbs to about 130g a day and I'm starting to see exactly what foods make me spike up to 10 or 1.

what I'm asking is, what do I do next? reduce carbs even more? get metformin increased? what should I be aiming for blood glucose wise?

obviously I should be asking the diabetic nurse this but ive yet to meet her as my surgery is a bit slow and I'm having to chase everything up myself

I am going by this so your meds might need changing but see your nurse or gp.

Well. see Dave - I don't regard 130g carb as being reduced since it would mean my eating more of em.

However my main message is, you've only given it the equivalent of 5 minutes, so far - so you need to leave it a bit longer, frankly, unless you want to DIY in which case reduce the carbs more and increase the above ground veg. Or - change to a smaller plate so the 'less' looks 'more' !

Well yes but the OP said he's reduced to 'around' 130g so sometimes - or even always - it could be more than 130, not less!

I think that with Gliclazide you aren't supposed to go low carb in case you go hypo - you could suggest stopping it and trying just diet to control your levels - which are quite good, and you might see them go lower over a few months. I certainly did - once I got down to 8mmol/l after eating I stuck to the same meals and saw my numbers go down to under 7.

Thank you and of course you are all right!

I need to give it more time plus 'play around' with the foods I eat and the amount of carbs, Rome wasn't built in a day.

Sticking to the same meals is easy for me once I have found the right balance as I meal prep most days.

I guess I was just feeling a bit overwhelmed when I posted the original post!

Sounds like you are making good progress @dave0992

Keep going! And keep checking around meals to try to ensure that there is a max rise of 2-3 from the carbs you are eating, tweaking down the amount of the types of carbs that seem particularly spiky for you.

If you can keep your meal rises low, your overall levels should come down gently too (which is easier on the body). It’s a marathin, not a sprint and all that 🙂

As others have said, you need to balance carbs with the meds you are taking, particularly the glic, which carries a risk of hypos - so you need to keep a close eye on things 🙂
