Hi all,

I have just exchanged on a house purchase and will be completing in the first week of January.

My mortgage lender says I need to take out Life Insurance for the mortgage amount.

I've done a quite with Aviva who reviewed it and refused it because I am diabetic.

Just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem, and if you managed to find an insurer?

Cheers,

My first year as a home owner was with Aviva but it was done through a broker who specialised in medical conditions such as diabetes......

I don't know if the presence of a third party gives the provider more confidence or something, anyway, it can be done, you just need to use a broker, usually....

there are definitely people out there who will insure you.....

I believe that Life Insurance is not compulsory, and your mortgage advisor should not be telling you it is. It may be advisory, as it means the mortgage will be paid off if anything happens to you leaving the house mortgage free for your family. But in the normal course of events, if you die, the mortgage will be paid off by the sale of the house.

I suppose it depends on your circumstances.......

if you live on your own in a one bedroom flat then yeah, the sale will sort it out.....but the rest of us certainly wont want to leave any debts or our families homeless....lol

I already had a mortgage when I developed diabetes, so the insurance for that was unaffected. But when I wanted to move and buy another house many of the big names wouldn't insure me.
So I asked Diabetes UK and they found me a specialist insurer or broker without any problems
My mortgage was paid off a few years ago now, and I can't remember the details, but it all went ahead simply enough

So contact diabetes UK and see what they have to say.

I have a life insurance policy with legal and general, and I got it before I was diagnosed this year. I did call them to let them know, but they said that because I took out the policy before diagnosis, they would not re-calculate what I currently pay monthly. They still haven't even now it has been renewed.
