My three year licence renewal comes up later this year.Somebody told me that if you are Type I they prefer you to be under a clinic. This has always been the case but when I broke my femur there were a few crossed wires (to try and be polite!). This ended up with me being sent a letter saying that I needed a referal from my GP for a clinic appointment. At the same time they stopped running clinics at my local hospital and "centralised" them miles away. As my GP practice has a DSN and a couple of GPs who specialise in diabetes I have been going there. I have felt no need to change the status quo particulary as I have heard a few negative comments about the large clinic - long waits, seeing a junior, etc. Has anybody with Type I had any issues because they are not under a clinic?

I hope not! I'll be interested to hear what people say here, as I no longer frequent a Hospital, GP does it all, except eyes! I would guess that it would be fine, and the team at the surgery would cover all the roles that a clinic would?

I can only think it's more importent that your control is in good shape, so long as you have your regular HbA1C's then I can't see where their problem is likely to be.

Plus with seeing your GP, especially if all is in good order you're possibly more likely to see them more frequently than the twice a year. All records about you will be in the same location, so if you have an eyesight problem as well as poor control your GP will know this, where you diabetologist is unlikely to know about your vision problems, unless diabetes related.

DVLA can't begin to force where a patient is seen when there are two options, sure if there are complications they could insist on a specialist review, but as there is talk in some circles about type 1's coming into primary care, something I dread, as the care I get from my clinic is better and more focussed than my GP surgery can offer, even though they are great people.

My re-newed licence has now come through for another three years. No C1 of course. It about 8 or 9 re-newals (my first licence was issued to 70) this is the fastest so far. I suspect my GP practice responded to the DVLA's queries faster than the clinic as I was once asked to chase them up.

That's brill to hear Michael, maybe next time we'll all get C1's! Well next year could be the start of it!!
