Hi
I was given a 3 year licence which will expire early 2010 - anybody know do I have to re-apply or do they notify me?
Also do I have to pay for renewal?
Thanx

They will send you renewal forms out a couple of months before it's due to expire, and no you don't have to pay for it.

I usually tell my hospital consultant if I know my licence will come up for renewal before my next appointment, and email her when I get the letter from DVLA - probably unecessary, but it always seems to go smoothly. And I always photocopy the forms I fill in and get certificate of posting when I send them back to DVLA. Again, proabably unecessary, but perhaps worthwhile, particularly when unpredictable postal strikes are happening.

Thanks guys, much appreciated. I know I had to pay when diagnosed but I think that was because I didn't have a photo ID licence only the old green paper one.

Interesting you had to pay, if it is DVLA who require you change your driving license e.g. change of address or notification of medical condition I thought the conversion was free of charge, except for the photo cost... The same with the 10 year renewal of photos.

Probably another money making racket from this government on the population who decide to be honest and play by the rules! 😱

be thankfull its a 3 year.
I used to have to do it three yearly then i put C1 category back on and its yearly now 🙂

i love paperwork

The thing to bear in mind is that if you do not recieve your renewal reminder you still need to apply for your licence. If you do not do this you may be fined for driving without a licence and your insurance will be invalid. Invalid insurance could also result in a fine so you could end up with (I think) 6 penalty points and ?100's in fines. And if you are involved in an accident things could get nasty.

Also when you re-new do check your entitlements. A friend wanted to take up motorcycling again but found that group A had gone missing from his licence. With no trace or proof he had to retake his test. Fortuneately he passed first time and celebrated by buying a Ducati Monster (a beautiful bike)!

Cave Troll, how easy was it to get C1 back on?? I've completed a medical for for this purpose and not heard back, did you do it this way? Are you required to get a medical done (at cost) every year?? Be interested to hear your experiences/thoughts as it's been bugging me for ages.

Thanks

Hi Ron,
When I've renewed my licence, I have posted off the forms the day I got them but have NEVER had my new licence returned prior to the old one expiring. The DVLA told me each time that I am able to carry on driving (without the licence) as long as I believe my control to be no worse than last time I renewed my licence!!! I'm not sure how that would work in a court of law.... I think Copepod's recommendations seem good and I think I might take those up next time!

i have to apply for my C1 every year. when it gets delayed the dvla tell me i can carry on driving until a medical decision is made which has always been in my favour. i hope this will help.

Essentially, if you have documentation from DVLA that they have approved your license then a court would accept that.

Equally a court may accept a few days lapse between your old license expiring and your new one arriving. BUT the law is clear, driving after your license that is in your possession has expired is a criminal offense, you also have no insurance.

DVLA look at the who spectrum of conditions, not just the diabetes, if you have any other diabetes associated health conditions they may decline or limit your license renewal accordingly.

If you were stopped by the police and your license had expired within the past couple of days, I'd suggest a very urgent call to DVLA telling them you've not received your license and where is it. Await their reply there and then. They will be able to tell you if it's issued or if there is an issue. At this stage if it's issued you need only hope the post arrives before the seven days for your producer expires.

If it is approved but not issued, I'd suggest you explain to the police when you deliver the documents requested under your producer to contact DVLA - as such, do not do this while the station isn't fully manned - front desk are very often civilians and can't contact people such as DVLA without authorisation.

In my experience even when everyone knows there is a medical reference coming from DVLA they play a game of total brinkmanship regarding the issue of a new license.

It is up to the driver to ensure their license is renewed, if the DVLA don't get a response from you after their first letter they won't chase you again. If that letter is one of the many that seem to get lost or delayed in the post and you didn't get it, in a court you'd not have a leg to stand on. As the judge would point out to you, you have your driving license, you know the date your license expires why did you let it expire?

i ask for a letter from the dvla when my licence expires. which states under the road traffic act 88 you may carry on driving whilst under medical investigation until a decision is made, thats the law simple as. just phone them and ask them to send you a letter. after 5 years you would think they the dvla would send correct paperwork out, i usaully end up chasing after the correct paperwork this is sometimes very stressful but well worth it in the end. its your right.
