It's become apparent in another thread that not everyone has been made aware of the update yet so here's the link to check whether yours needs updating or not

https://www.freestyle.abbott/uk/en/reader-update/index.html

DO NOT update your reader if you are wearing an activated sensor and have no other way of scanning it though as you wont be able to use the scanner on an active sensor if you update

xx

Well updated the reader and inserted the new sensor, initally the sensor and strip test were very close. Since the sensor seems to be reading higher than the last one and the strip test is lower . I inserted this one slightly higher on my arm, but will see how it goes.

Thanks for the link, @Kaylz - unfortunately when I had a look it said:

Sorry, the software that's required to update your Reader is not compatible with your computer.
Compatible Versions:
PC running Windows 7 SP1 or higher
Mac running OS X Sierra or higher

I'd have thought there are enough people now using Chrome on Linux machines for them to provide this as an option, but apparently not 🙄

That’s weird - given that Mac is Linux-based!

I would phone the helpline to ask. I could not update my reader as it was too old and they sent me a new one as a replacement.

Yeah they should have it available for other users to be able to update, I saw someone mention it on their FB page and their response was did they not have a family or friend member with the required software that could update it for them, I don't know if giving them a call would do any good but always an option to try 🙂

😱 how long have you had it? I even managed to update the one I received in 2017 when I had my 2 week trial! lol

It was a 2015 one :D

To be pedantic Mac OS is Unix based rather than Linux. The two share some kernel code but aren't as identical as people think.

They're from different branches of the Unix family (Mac OS is BSD, Linux is a new thing), so actually they share little code (and as far as I know no kernel code). If you're writing non-GUI code it's usually straightforward to write in such a way that it can be built for GNU/Linux and Mac OS (not trivial, but simpler than adding Windows); for a GUI things are more different, and once you add in more low-level stuff like USB access I suspect it becomes challenging.

Much as I'd like them to support GNU/Linux, I can see why they don't.

He is recovering slowly, thanks @Kaylz - still wearing the lumbar corset and needing a walker to get round the house, and sleeping a lot, but his spine's less achey, and he's started to do about an hour a day of working from home. I'm still exhausted trying to care for him when he normally cares for me, but it helps that he's now able to stand long enough to do most of the washing up!

Would a perching stool help, I find mine invaluable , my 93 year old dad uses it too 🙂 your Gp can refer you to the relevant department for a huge variety of equipment on loan from the NHS store.

R rang our surgery for a referral to OTs shortly after he got back from hospital, and GP said he would get an OT to call him back. They didn't so R rang again - and the receptionist said "oh, it'll take a few days". R pointed out that I was so near collapsing with exhaustion that in a few more days he could be back in hospital and I could be bed-bound. GP said he'd try to fast-track us. Nothing happened 😡

We decided we could either spend a lot of time and effort getting stressed contacting PALS and trying to get help (and probably still not getting it in time) or we could just concentrate on getting ourselves washed and fed and leave everything else. We did the latter for a few really difficult days until we both started to feel slightly more functional. Then R rang the number the hospital physios had given him for advice about exercise, and inadvertently got through to an OT there - she said "I'll send you a kitchen trolley", and did (and it's been very helpful, I no longer have to carry everything from room to room for him).

The OT connected with the surgery rang on a Wednesday afternoon about a week later and left a message on R's voicemail. When he called back first thing on the Thursday morning he was told "oh, she's off now until next Wednesday" - and apparently because he'd been assigned to her, no-one else there was allowed to help 😡 So we decided to just buy a step with a rail so he could get into the shower, which was the main thing he'd wanted to ask her about (we did look at perching stools, but it's more comfortable for him to stand than to sit - what he really needs is something to help him get things out of the fridge, and something to wash his feet, as he can't bend).

When he finally spoke to surgery OT on the following Wednesday they decided that by the time she'd got someone here to assess our needs, we probably wouldn't need anything any more 🙄

Omg you have both been treated rather shabbily, tbh imo the hospital should have ensured R had everything he needed before being discharged. I understand only too well that atm you haven’t got the energy, time or patience to deal with the powers that be , got the T shirt. It’s so blooming hard when you need a bit of help the most that everything goes pear shaped

I hope you find this helpful
Four yrs ago due to an accident I had to have a hip replacement, so for 12 weeks I wasn’t allowed to bend beyond 90 degrees, me and my feet became distant friends , very distant lol. I found a bowl of soapy water and swishing my feet around in it helped, sitting down afterwards with feet wrappec up in a dry towel till they were dry and not putting shoes or slippers on till in between my toes dried, helped. Later on I bought a scrunchy back brush the handle had a slight bend to it, that helped clean my feet a bit better. You can get a toe cleaner but I have no idea how good they are.
Disregard the above if it’s not suitable .
I know it’s hard for you both right now. We an old have a saying in my family for times like you are going through, it’s meant in the kindest possible way.

Just keep the dirt from your mouth.
In other words the housework will keep

I hope R makes the swiftest possibly recovery and you rest up whenever you get the chance ok.
TC ML to you both.

Thanks, Lin - and that's a good saying, very apt at the moment!

Yes, we thought they should have done an assessment before sending R home from hospital, we were really surprised when they said he could go home so soon. I think they must have needed the bed. He did say to the physios that I'm disabled and wouldn't be able to care for him, but they said they'd be sending him home even if he lived alone o_O I've no clue how he could have managed - he couldn't have either climbed the stairs or moved a mattress downstairs (I had to do that on my own before he got back, which was one reason I was so shattered), he couldn't have made a cup of tea or carried it out of the kitchen, let alone cooked anything to eat or carried a plate, he couldn't have washed properly or got all his clothes on and off, let alone climbed up into the shower. The only things they provided were the walker and a pair of crutches. They also prescribed him 14 days' worth of painkillers and sent him home with 4 days' worth, and we didn't realise until we got to day 4 and there weren't any more 😡

Anyway, sorry I've gone way off-topic for this thread 😳

Why on Earth should Abbott support GNU/Linux? As 95% of the world is Android or iOS for phones and Mac or Windows for computers, why bother?

In any event, someone somewhere will be working on a fix, so just stick around and wait for that to happen. I give it three months.

Updated my reader at the weekend and sensor appears to be reading high rather than low so far. I'll see what happens today before threatening it with a report to Abbott

I updated mine Tuesday, initially was further out but after 48 hours it became quite close.
