Having been using this system for just a few months now, I've only recently discovered that my reader won't work at all if I start a new sensor on my phone first, whereas it will work on both if I start on reader first, then phone. That wasn't a problem until I've switched to Libre 2, wherein I want the alarms on my phone. Its been very handy when cycling, but I prefer not to have phone by bed though I am currently having to do this.
This renders my reader useless. My Nurse said she will contact Abbott about it, as she'd had other reports of this.

Do you think this can be fixed by firmware update alone?
I hope so as I'd really like the option of using both, especially if I switch to using the Reader for actual blood strip testing too.

Libre has always had to be started with reader first to use both the reader and phone.

Libre 2 uses Bluetooth to transfer data to be used for alerts.
As with most Bluetooth transmitters the one on the sensor can only pair with one device. Hence alerts can only sound on the device used to start the sensor - the one the Bluetooth us paired with.."Fixing" this is not a firmware update. It requires a redesign of the Bluetooth chip and maybe Bluetooth itself.

No no no, I mean the reader. Its software requires it to be paired first rather than a mobile phone. What I'm hoping for is that a "simple" update that would allow it to be used when the first activation is via phone, not reader.
The phone app allows the phone to work when the reader is used first, so why not both ways round?

Bluetooth is irrelevant at this stage as I'm talking about first use to start sensor, but allowing the choice of which device is used to first start a sensor will allow users to properly choose where they want their BT alerts coming from.

@Suprated - so you want to be able to start a Libre 2 sensor with a phone so that the phone always gets the alerts but to be able to then use the Reader to scan the sensor?
Given the requirement to scan first with the reader to be able to chose whether to later scan with reader or phone app is a "feature" since Libre 1, this is not a "simple" update. The developers would have made it years ago if it was.

@helli Yes, that's it. That's exactly what I was asking. It just seems like an oversight to me to not have it both ways, presumably since readers came first and add-in apps on smartphones are a more recent thing in the whole history of tech.
Something must get "triggered" in the sensor though when started, so that the Libre Reader senses that it has already been started by another "reader". That makes sense as a failsafe to prevent people from all scanning each others sensors like some sort of San Francisco Love-in for blood glucose.
Perhaps having the option to direct BT alerts to one device or another exclusively, rather than the default starting device might work.

I am afraid this is just how the system works.

The alarms are only available on the device that starts the sensor. And to use both reader and phone you have to start the reader first (so can’t have alarms on phone).

I hope this is something they fix with later software releases, as I would have much preferred to have phone as primary device, and reader as backup - and I suspect I’m not alone in that. :(
