Can I have exemption from tax VAT? When I buy a CGM as I have type 2 diabetes?

Can’t get it on prescription I tried on a trial it was very useful I am insulin dependent.A bit fed up you can’t buy one sensor at a time.Have to buy two minimum.

You should definitely push for having a CGM on prescription if you are insulin dependent - see link below

It's worth making the case, though I get the impression that many areas are not following the NICE guidance.

Yes, just tick the relevant box and fill in the details.

You can, but the starter pack (with two sensors) is cheaper, per sensor.

If you do end up having to buy them (and decide you want to do so frequently), you might look at Dexcom One+ which I understand can work out a little cheaper. (The requirements for phone compatibility are a bit more restrictive, though.)

I have Dr at Community Diabetes Team will not do a recommendation letter for the GP and GP will not give a prescription without one.I also find doing finger prick tests very had and I been doing it for 17 year.I also have mental health issues and dyslexic and can’t workout how to use short-acting insulin.I Ok with long acting insulin.I also on diabetes tablets as well.

Thoses Nice guidelines not going to help me you must fingerprick eight times a day and have severe hypos.the only thing in my favour is I have to take inject insulin three times a day.

That's not right and should be rectified - maybe see if you can speak to a consultant - Unfortunately as @Bruce Stephens has said it can be a bit of a postcode lottery but it definitely sounds like you have compelling reasons to be prescribed a CGM

She was a consultant and yes I agree it is a post code lottery and all the GPs practices in my area have group together so no hope there the DNS was in Favour and went ask her she said no.

Hi @Totalwar
Just noticed your post

Yes if you were self funding a sensor is VAT exempt
but my Question for you is (as a T2 on insulin who has previously been successful in getting my libra funded)

If your injecting insulin 3 times a day, how many times a day are you actually testing
I’m sure like the rest of us your testing first thing in the morning
possibly before / and possibly after eating
also do you drive
prior to taking insulin

how well controlled is your levels

It’s not necessary a postcode lottery

Sometimes none at all find it very difficult but I do mostly fasting in the morning but sometimes go months without testing at all.If it was not for the trial CGM I would not have noticed that during the day my sugar levels were out of control and needed a extra dose of short acting insulin that the DSN recommended.

Another compelling agrument for having access to the tech you need to control your diabetes and the potential for complications as a result of not - regardless of type of Diabetes, you should, in my opinion, be given the necessary tools to help deal with the condition and prevent further problems - you should be checking your BG regularly, particularly if you are injecting insulin 3 times a day - very short-sighted on the part of your healthcare team I think - I really hope you get the right outcome in the end (I'm very passionate about this, as you can see!! - it makes me very angry - rant over! 😡 )

It’s probably good the DSN was able to introduce another insulin for you then
but a shame that it was after you used CGM yourself to expose the need for an adjustment to your meds

I can slightly relate to not testing regularly, as going back a few years ago I didn’t take care of myself as much as i should have, I now suffer with some of the consequences

I think you should be testing though, easy to say - but please look after yourself
having only been a convert to CGM this summer, for people that are willing to use it & understand what’s happening to our levels, CGM is very useful and in the future I’m sure it might be offered to more people :thankyou:

I’m going to ask you a direct Question
why @Totalwar don’t you finger prick test ?

Because I cant stand the pain anymore and starting not being able to to test on some fingers without going deeper.I also on blood thinners because I had a TIA and would help as well because I had a episode of DKA.Thanks for listening venting some of my frustration here too have a out let with other who have some understanding what it’s like to have diabetes.

You may want to look at your finger pricking technique as it shouldn't be necessary to prick deeper to get a small drop of blood especially if you are on blood thinners.
You should really be testing to keep yourself safe even if you have a Libre due to their being less reliable at high and low levels.

Feel free to rant away (I do on occasions!) and glad you have found us and feel free to ask any questions you may have

My thinking is you should ask your GP / DSN to re apply for funding for CGM
I will PM you my advice that, you never know might help

no need to apologise on here for venting your frustration, I think there’s many of us on here that would if we didn’t bottle it all up
then probably end up exploding if we didn’t have the opportunity to share our experiences

Looks like not going to get CGM sensor spoken to my GP again and they said I need to speak to my diabetes team but I already have been turned down by them.Looks like going to have to fund the sensor myself even if it for four weeks. But I will find this useful.

As a type 2 just using insulin isn’t enough to qualify for libre. You must fill other criteria such as being advised to test 8+ times a day or needing a carer to manage your diabetes
