Hello,

In the last two weeks I have started to use Levemir. I previously used Lantus for about 8+ years. I was changed to Levemir as my sugars were high around 5-6am. The option I was given was to take more Lantus but that gave me lows during the day as i didn't want to over eat to compensate the insulin. The idea for Levemir is that I can give a moderate dose when i wake up and a higher dose before I go to bed to tackle the early morning highs.

I know I've only been taking Levemir for two weeks but my sugars seem to be higher in the morning. I was told Levemir units are like for like in strength vs Lantus and that the same dosage will do. I'm not sure about that as my 6am sugars are 16+ even though I've increased the dosage.

I'm sure I'll work it out soon enough but has anyone had any problems adjusting to the change?

Also... had to start using the new Novopen 4... not the biggest fan.... bring back 3 😉

When I used Levermir in split doses, I found that I had very strange results until I started adjusting the opposite dose to the one you would have thought. So for example adjusting the morning dose affected my night time levels, and adjusting the pre-bed one affected my daytime levels! I found I needed slightly less Levermir than Lantus to keep me reasonably stable.

I didn't end up trying Levemir, but from reading others' experiences it seems to me there is no guarantee that the two insulins will be interchangeable in strength.

Have you done any fasting testing of Levemir to try to get a picture of how it is working without meal doses confusing matters? Details here: http://www.diabetes-support.org.uk/info/?page_id=120

Do you actually take the night-time one at bedtime?
