Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi, This is the first time I have posted 🙂 I have had Type 1 for over 26 years now (I'm 32) I'm currently pregnant with baby number 2 and of course, I'm speaking to the diabetes team every week at the hospital, my levels are really good but last week I had a different diabetes consultant (different almost every week) who made a comment about how much insulin I take... and now I'm worrying..
I know pregnancy makes you need more and also the number of years I have had diabetes will make a difference too! But I wondered what others were taking for AM and PM Levemir and what unit to carb ratio you are on. so I can compare it to my pre-pregnancy levels.
Thanks 🙂

Welcome @M.b.e.g 🙂 And congratulations on your pregnancy. I’ve found there’s a huge variation in insulin doses amongst Type 1s so I don’t worry about it. I really wouldn’t worrywhen you’re pregnant because the insulin resistance in pregnancy can be massive eg my basal dose almost quadrupled! My ratios changed a lot too. I don’t remember the exact changes now but my breakfast ratio went from 1:8 to 1:2/3. One lady’s went from 1:10 to 1:1!

We’re all different and we all need the insulin we need 🙂

Hello and welcome to the forum congratulations on your pregnancy as well 🙂

With insulin, you need what you need end of story so if your numbers say you are on the right amount you are 🙂

I would go so far as to say your consultant's comment suggests that they have very little experience and understanding of diabetes and particularly during pregnancy. Do not worry about their comment, "you need what you need" as others have said and if your control is good then they should be praising you, not causing you doubt and worry.

Thank you all for your comments! It's reassuring! I felt like I knew it was ok, but pregnancy does make the hormones go array and sometimes making you lack confidence! I think you are right @rebrascora the lack of experience might be why as it was hardly a constructive remark seeing as at the end of the call he said, your levels look really good overall!!
@Inka mine are currently all different for each meal, breakfast the highest at 4 units to 10 grams! ... When I started carb counting at about 17 yrs I was on 3 units to 15grms.. so I have clearly always been a little resistant.. as he referenced 1 unit to 10 and I thought (oh no what's wrong with me) haha

Pregnancy makes you worry about lots of things @M.b.e.g Totally normal - and having diabetes is just another thing to worry about. But the important thing is that you’ve got really good control. That’s brilliant! Forget how much insulin you’re using and any worries about that - you’re hitting your targets and that’s amazing 😎

Best wishes for your pregnancy @M.b.e.g

Some people who need higher insulin doses take Metformin alongside their insulin to increase sensitivity.

But I would guess all bets are off during the hormone upheaval of pregnancy!
