Let myself down badly

Had a late one in London today, CPD in central London (work in Aldgate when in the office). Decided I would get food on the way home as wouldn't be home until around 10. Well, the carb monster in me came racing to the surface and stuffed its face with McDonalds. I'll see what damage I've done later.

Been a very long time since I've stayed out late. Was also a good reminder that nearly everything available to purchase at this time of night is either sky-high in carbs or refined sugar. Self inflected.
 
Hello there. I’m pre diabetic and I had gf pizza that’s also dairy free. I’m still trying to see what I can and can’t have. On a low carb diet for 3 weeks now. Made some carb mistakes last week but were only human aren’t we. I’ve no idea what my glucose levels are etc . But I get back on that wagon and it makes me try harder, to stay on track.

Places like the little M&S in train stations usually have salads or packets of cooked chicken or whatever. Even at McDonald’s you can make alright choices though, and the less so good choices are alright occasionally.

This is very true but as I said, the carb monster was on it and was having nothing less! Lol . Effects weren't as bad as I was expecting @ 17.2 mmol/L

Now drinking water like fish and peeing like a trooper!

It can be difficult particularly when eating out, planned or on the fly. Food outlets are a lot better than they were and are still improving choice. The annoying thing is (certainly applies at my GP) that unless you are medicating for diabetes (glamiperide) in our case, they won't give you a glucose meter and rely on your HbA1c readings.

It is very hard especially when you're a carb junkie.

A sandwich would probably have been available at a train station and less carbs than a McDonald’s? Not saying you shouldn’t have had the McDonald’s just thinking for next time.
 
A blood glucose monitor bought on line can be inexpensive (likely no more than 2 MacDonald meals) and would serve you better in you can then take control over managing your condition rather than the irregular HbA1C. All right you would still need to buy test strips but by using them strategically you can make better food choices and that would likely save you money. The Glucoavii or TEE2 have some of the cheaper strips.

Tell me about it. I’m new to all this and I’m struggling. Can’t buy the book I need yet the carb and cal one as I’m living off pip and my husband is the only wage earner. Low income. I’m getting very frustrated with it. My appointment with the diabetes nurse is the 14 th.

You don’t need a book to count carbs. Download any supermarket app, the Tesco or Sainsburys ones at least have the carb information there.

Or download the nutracheck app, you can use the free version to look up carbs, you will only be able to log a few things a day on the free version but you can use it to look up carbs and note them down on paper.

Or myfitnesspal may have a free version of the app but I haven’t looked into what that includes.

I'm seconding the advice to buy a blood glucose monitor; trying to reduce BG levels without one is like driving at night without headlights. You need to be able to see where you're going and identify (avoid) your personal carb potholes.
