Hi All,

Don't know if any of you all can remember how long it took to get your Learner's after applying for the first time? (I have sent off the D1 form by post and also my DIAB1 questionnaire). The form says it can take up to 3 weeks without medical checks and I'm really hoping it's not longer... (I'm time limited as I need to get my full license by June.

Full disclosure I already know how to drive, I lost my license a couple years ago when I was dead broke and couldn't pay the insurance one month.

If anyone can recall it would be a great help as I'm concerned if it will get delayed or if further documents will be needed to be filled out?

Welcome to the forum Charlie H.

Medical checks can be very quick (only a few working days), provided the name(s) you stated know you and have seen your diabetes records recently, plus the addresses are correct. If you haven't seen person(s) you stated recently, it's probably worth contacting them to alert them to your situation. So, medical checks could increase from 3 to 4 weeks. Presumably you need to fit in getting Provisional Licence, then passing all sections of test, to achieve Full Licence by June? That's quite a challenge, so good luck. And get your insurance sorted out! I guess it will be expensive as you've had a licence removed. Type 1 diabetes shouldn't make any difference, as long as you don't have hypoglycaemia that requires help, which would affect your right to a licence on medical grounds. You know that you will probably be given a 3, 2 or 1 year licence?

If you have held a full licence before will they not just reinstate the full licence after checks?

Thanks for the response, very helpful. Well luckily I already know how to drive, as long as I get the provisional before the start of May I think I have a good shot of completing the theory and practical in time I would hope but I guess it depends on the wait times for both. Fingers crossed.

unfortunately no, as I had only held my licence for 1.5 years and not the required 2. Otherwise it would have just been a fine. They revoke your license completely and you have to start the whole process from scratch. Oh well.

I shouldn't actually bank on it being quick Charlie - we're involved in a motorhome forum where there are a number of either elderly or medically impaired people, and some of em drive ruddy great heavy things that require annual medicals etc for licensing without added age or medical conditions, and they are reporting at least a 15 week backlog in the Medical Branch of DVLA at the moment - just for straightforward renewals.

But of course - I hope you are lucky and you do sort it out in time.
