Hi , my 30 year old son ,recently diagnosed type1, on insulin, was ok at first but now suffering night time leg pains that keep him awake. What sshould he do ? GP no help

Hello @Beverley CD ,

I am so sorry to hear about your son and I can only imagine how difficult this must be for him. It may be helpful to contact our helpline for further clarification, but it could possibly be neuropathy as well. I have included a link below with some information.

 
Leg pains are NOT a side effect of fairly newly onset Type 1 Diabetes.

However - if his blood glucose had been too high for too long whilst the diabetes was 'brewing' it's possible that yes, he could have diabetic neuropathy without symptoms. Now he's diagnosed and the blood glucose is being reduced, this can cause the neuropathy to cure itself and as the damaged nerves start to repair themselves - yes it can and will hurt.

All in all though we can't diagnose what it is - but his doctor(s) can !! So - he needs to ask them.
