Relationship to Diabetes

for the past few weeks when i walk, i am getting horrific pains in my lower legs. so bad that i have to stop walking & rest.

finally got to see my gp yesterday who did a foot check. my pulses are still as strong as what they were when i had a foot check in july.

he thinks its diabetic vascular disease due to my diabetes (really? i'm diabetic? i wouldnt of guessed) - he said he isnt a 100% sure that it is that or what it really is

he's sent me off for a month to record better data of when it happens, how long for, what sort of a surface i'm walking on etc then when i go back he will look at referring me to a specialist if its still happening.

anyone able to suggest ideas of how to help it?

will you be using a note book or using a sheet on the computer?

My suggested columns would be date time of day, how long for, the surface you walk on, indoors or out, what the weather is like for outside walks, how you feel before and how you feel afterwards.

I'd probably do it on an excel spread sheet for ease of filling things in and then print it off before I see the doctor.

Sounds like a bit of a copout to blame the diabetes, especially if your circulation and pulses are generally good, although he has asked for more info which is good. You say it's only been happening recently - does it coincide with when you got the pump by any chance? Any changes in your routine, and does it always happen when you walk or just sometimes? Always with the same shoes, or doesn't matter?

i wear the same shoes alan, the length i've walked before it starts isnt always the same

i think its a cop out saying its my diabetes but hey, what do i know? (its the same doc who said gastroenteritis was due to my poor control aka my hbA1c was under 7mmol)

Sounds like you need to check their qualifications don't come from the same place as Gillian McKeith! 😱

hey laura
was going to say the same thing as alan....doctors cant blame *everything* on our D - esp. if you dont have problems with your circulatory system, and your A1C is good.

Is there anything you are doing differently? A few weeks ago I had a massive sharp pain in my back, below my right shoulder blade, I tried to change the way I lift things and bend over and now its gone, so sometimes its just down to the way we stand / our posture / the way we lift things / sit down (or slouch in case!).
I hope you get it sorted soon ! 🙂. otherwise, maybe a bit of gentle swimming might help?

oh my gp blames the weather on my D.
erm no, the only change is i'm on the pump now but cant see that being the issue & also that i've lost about half a stone

Have your levels improved a lot since you got the pump Laura? I know that some people can get a form of transient neuropathy if they experience a rapid improvement in levels.

Hi,

Do you have skin discolouration, at all ? Is it on the shin-area, going down to the front of the foot / ankle area ?

Helen

No skin changes or anything.

Alan my sugar levels haven't been that settled compared to MDI but I've hardly had any hypos since going on the pump.

I assume you are in your 20s or 30s at oldest and are not a smoker. Also that your diabetes control has never been terrible
Therefore unless you have inherited an extremely unlucky gene or there is some other unknown factor at play- if you have problems with your circulation I will eat my hat
Everytime I read about your GP(s) my Tourette's begins to flare up...

I'm 26 abi, non smoker & my hbA1c has always been under 7

Don't think you are the only one, my Tourette's is really bad at the thought of my gp
