The biggest ever Ironman race is currently underway being hosted in Boulder, Colorado, America’s least obese city. More than 3,000 people registered for Boulder’s first Ironman event, allowing the city to live up to its reputation of being one of the healthiest and fittest places on earth. The race was won by a Boulderite, Justin Daerr.

Boulder residents are renowned for their high levels of athleticism, the city also has a significantly low rate of obesity. According to the most recent Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index published in early April, the national obesity rate has risen from 26.2 percent in 2012 to 27.1 percent in 2013, which is the all time highest level of obesity measured since 2008. While Mississippi had the highest rate of obesity at 35.4 percent, Boulder, with an obesity rate of just 12.4 percent has the lowest recorded rate in the nation.

Research also shows that people who are obese are more likely to be diagnosed with some form of chronic disease at some time in their life. Higher rates of depression, cholesterol, diabetes, cancer and coronary heart disease are shown to rise as the levels of obesity do. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, cities like Boulder with low rates of obesity also have relatively lower rates of chronic diseases such as diabetes.
