I have been reading quite a lot of this on here and other diabetes websites. Does LCHF mean not eating any bread, pasta, rice, potatoes etc, or eating very small amounts of them? Is there any other food I should be careful with that I might not realise is high in carbs?

I am expecting my meter to arrive on Friday so I can see what effects different foods have on my blood sugar levels, but in the meantime what to try and eat as much to the LCHF as possible.

There are lots of good resources to help you but yes......LHCF does mean low carb, very low carb if you choose to.....

with your meter though you have the best tool to establish what you can and cant have that is personal to you and you wont need to stick to any strict rules following LHCF necessarily....its all relatively fluid, depending on your BG findings...
 
I can't go as low as some recommend, so I mostly eat what suits me and I can sustain long term. When I was first diagnosed I was too strict and although I lost weight had good bloods,and managed with diet and exercise, I could not sustain long term. I now mainly eat around 120 grams of Carbhydrate, and gradually lost weight and reduced medication over the last 3 years. You have to find works for you.
 
I'm with you there grovesy. I can't sustain too low carb either and end up binging and eating way more. So I try to keep as low as possible.
 
My diet does typically exclude Bread, Pasta, Rice, Cereals & root vegetables..... I find it quite easy to live on this diet & usually have between 5 - 40 carbs a day
 
I can't sustain low carb either, but I can't tolerate much in the way of fat. I think it's just finding the balance which works for you.

Avoid pizza, which is notorious for keeping blood sugar high, and avoid shop-bought cereals, which are packed with sugar. Some people can eat oats and others can't, so you'll have to see whether they are OK for you or not when you have your meter. Dried fruit sends blood sugar up quickly - fab for type 1s when our blood sugar gets too low, but not very good for diabetics otherwise! Fruit generally is something to limit, but berries are much lower in carbs than other fruit so try to go for those if you're low carbing and still want to eat fruit.

Whatever you choose to do it must be sustainable. Allow yourself the occasional naughty treat . Your meter will guide you on what your body tolerates well. Keep a food diary and record your BGs results before and after eating.
Till you get your meter and have got the hang of testing, I advise cutting down on your portions of rice, potatoes, pasta and bread, fill up on non starchy veg.
Avoid fruit juice as it's packed full of sugar.
Many here have Lidle protein rolls or Bergen (sp?) bread , I have wholemeal bread .
 
Best to keep low carbs if possible 🙂. Much less damage to health if you stick to it. Go for walks after tea etc 😉
 
If you're considering LCHF, I recommend checking out these websites. www.dietdoctor.com, www.ditchthecarbs.com & www.lowcarbyum.com. You'll be surprised at what you can eat when doing LCHF. I made a Yule Log for Christmas (recipe on Low Carb Yum) that tasted so naughty but was perfectly safe for us. I made a bread using ground Linseed that was very nice & very filling. You may find some ingredients a bit weird (& things you've never heard of) but most of these can be bought from www.buywholefoodsonline.com. Any questions, please ask.🙂
