LAWYERS are taking ?1million a day from the NHS in fees levied on hospital compensation claims.

The NHS Litigation Authority, which pays out to patients injured by poor health service treatment, spent ?1.3billion last year settling all the claims brought against it, with solicitors paid a record chunk of ?351million.

It means these lawyers receive ?25 for every ?100 paid out, with claimants getting ?75. The fees are so huge they could fund an extra 10,000 nurses in the NHS.

Critics of the system, which has seen lawyers? fees paid by the NHSLA double in the past five years, blame ?no-win, no-fee? solicitors who tout for business in adverts in A&E waiting rooms.
