Relationship to Diabetes

At my last DB clinic, about 2 or 3 months ago, the specialist referred me back to my GP for DB management, and with a pre-scheduled GP appointment for today, last week I arranged for blood work. I checked the results on MyDiabetes this morning and ......

Noting that back at the end of April, my HBA1C was a 135 and at one point my BP was well excess 0f 150, (hence the mini-stroke,) I am quite satisfied. Need to wait and see what the Doc says though.

Brilliant lipids result! Atorvastatin 80mg is a powerful thing, apart from whatever else you're doing lipids-wise.

The important thing is your non-HDL-C, which is really low at 0.9 mmol/l. Having had a stroke you want it to be as low as possible, so ignore anybody cluelessly wittering on about it being too low etc etc. Aslo ignore anybody who wants to talk about "ratios".

Mine is at an also-low 1.2 mmol/l but I was down at your 0.9 mmol/l for a while last year & my nose didn't fall off, didn't grow a tail etc.

In view of the latest on the cost of living crisis and this DBUK report, that begs a question which deserves an honest answer.

Eschewing the use of my old peoples bus pass and walking a lot more obviously helps a lot, but primarily it is down to a change in diet.

Previously, my diet relied heavily on carbs: Sugar, chocolate biscuits, tortillas, crisps. potatoes, rice. pasta, bread..... etc. Now, I avoid all of these old favourites and my diet primarily consists of: Berries, apples, cauliflower, courgette, mushrooms, aubergine, asparagus, leeks, avocado... etc. As a result, my weekly food bill has shot up from under £35 to between £70 and £80 a week or even more.

If I didn't shop in six different supermarkets looking for bargains, it could easily be well in excess of a £100 per week just for food for 1 person. As it is, I find many of the bargain items are often sold out so that, for example, instead of paying £6 for a weekly supply of frozen imperfect berries, I am having to pay £12. (To buy fresh would cost £17.50)

When you consider that currently, in the UK, obesity and even full blown type 2 diabetes amongst children is reaching alarming proportions. I find the amounts I am having to spend to eat a healthy diet shocking, and to those with young children struggling with the cost of living I can only convey my deepest sympathies.

I know, right? Cries out for incentives to produce cheap appealing processed foods which are also healthy.

I don't know how many frozen berries you eat in a week but Tesco or Aldi have at £2.99 per kg for imperfect or £2.40 for 500g of the others.6

About 250g a day. or, (roughly,) 2kg a week. That's a large bowl for either breakfast or desert with my evening meal, usually with plain yoghurt. Recently. the imperfect berries are not always available and the £2.40 500g bags you mentioned are in similar short supply. Offhand 150g punnets of fresh berries are about £2.50 each in Sainsbury's, with Tesco's being similarly priced.

I too find it quite surprising the amount of berries you are going through. A bag of sour cherries or mixed berries from Lidl is about £1.99 and lasts me nearly 2 weeks. I have about 10-12 cherries or rasps a day in my yoghurt on a morning and that is enough. I may also have half an apple since I have lots off the trees to use up but most of the year, those few berries are my daily fruit intake and I seem to be fine on that.

I agree that carbs are cheap and protein and veg are more expensive but then I find I eat less because I eat more fat.... That said, my weekly cheese bill is getting scary 😱!

Well, the Doc was suitably impressed and said that, as far as DB management goes, she doesn't need to see me for six months 😎

By the way, I don't know how the rest of you are getting on with the weather, but here in Edinburgh it was really heavy, cold, almost sleety, rain all afternoon.That is unusual for Edinburgh, compared to the rest of Scotland, East Lothian usually has a very dry, mild climate.
 
I should say that the "heart" is for the fact that the doc is delighted with your progress (and rightly so) and you are now onto 6 monthly appointments.
Not so loving the weather... We were OK here in County Durham up until a couple of hours ago but it has been lashing it down since then. Makes you feel for all the homeless people living on the streets when the weather is like this.

It can be a bit rough, but we've usually got tents, tarpaulins and big fires. Often, there can be quite a bit of camaraderie. It is the junkies and hardened alcoholics who really have problems. Usually they are too far gone to realise they need to get out of the weather. The ones who have it the worst though, are the prostitutes. While many, (men and women,) are addicts, many of the women are just trying to support a family.

It's not a guaranteed source of anything, but the Olio app may help with sourcing some of the fruit and vegetables you eat, especially if you're happy to freeze berries yourself and flexible about which berries/veg. I've been able to eat a lot more veg without spending a lot more money since I started using it more (and especially since I started doing some of the supermarket food waste hero collections)

I'm a little way over in lanarkshire and its wet, cold and yukkk here too.

South East here and the weather has been blowing up a storm most nights. Its still mild temperature wise though
