Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi,
I keep finding myself waking up in the morning (usually about half 5) and from then until about 9am having a steady blood sugar level of 6-9. I then find about half 10/11am it goes up to about 13 and I don’t understand why?
the only thing I have in the morning is a tetley tea with semi skimmed milk.
Does anyone know the reason behind this?
It happened this morning but last night I had a healthy meal no insulin needed. Doesn’t make sense why it would go up.

A really late dawn phenomenon? (It's normally around the time you wake up, but I guess it's not impossible that if you were relaxed enough during the early morning that you'd get the stress hormones much later. Doesn't seem very believable, I admit.)

Ask @everydayupsanddowns - Mike and I both generally suffer from what I call 'Foot Hits the Floor' phenomenon. This actually behaves not unlike Dawn Phenomenon, in that the way to prevent it happening is actually to break our fast. Again, it does NOT need to be carbs! Cheese, egg, ham whatever. No need to bolus therefore, just do it.

What basal insulin are you using and when do you inject it? It may be a basal insulin problem.... either the timing of it or the type of basal insulin or it could be a very late "foot on the floor"/Dawn Phenomenon but I think that is less likely with the timescales you mention.
Unfortunately a low carb snack doesn't work for my Foot on the Floor and I need to use bolus insulin to correct it. Usually 1-2 units of insulin sorts mine. I inject it as soon as I wake up because my levels start rising quite dramatically even in the first 5 mins of getting up but for you it sounds like you might need to take it much later if a low carb snack doesn't help to stop it.

I would look at your basal insulin first. I seem to remember you asked about basal testing recently so you are obviously already looking at that situation. Let us know how you get on.
