The first cases of large vessel arterial occlusion strokes linked to the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine have been described in the United Kingdom.

The three cases (one of which was fatal) occurred in two women and one man in their 30s or 40s and involved blockages of the carotid and middle cerebral artery. Two of the three patients also had venous thrombosis involving the portal and cerebral venous system. All three also had extremely low platelet counts, confirmed antibodies to platelet factor 4, and raised D-dimer levels, all characteristic of the vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT) reaction associated with the AstraZeneca vaccine.

They are described in detail in a letter published online on May 25 in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry.

"These are first detailed reports of arterial stroke believed to be caused by VITT after the AstraZeneca COVID vaccine, although stroke has been mentioned previously in the VITT data," senior author, David Werring, PhD, FRCP, commented to Medscape Medical News.

Though it has to be said that the risk of thrombosis with the vaccine is far lower than the same risk with Covid infection itself. My guess Is that these folk would have developed the condition anyway if they acquired Covid. Though that is just speculation.

Well I had my first dose of AZ vaccine in April with no obvious side effects, and shall be having the second dose at the beginning of July without a second thought. There are risks with any drug, the risks are minuscule and you are very unlucky if you are the one who gets the nasty side effects. I'd rather take those risks than catch the disease itself which could quite possibly be far worse. No brainer for me!

Whilst I understand the trepidation younger folk than me might have re the blood clot risk - when I was 17 in 1967 - I started taking the birth control pill since I was indulging in behaviour that is known to cause pregnancy - and my parents' reaction to that occurring was far worse in prospect than me having a blood clot and dropping dead! - and then once we got married I stayed on the pill as we couldn't afford a baby.

But - Who even considers blood clots killing them when actually deciding to have a baby? Cos it's a risk ..... !

Ten days after the first jab my legs and feet were swollen and shiny - I was eventually within hours of going to A&E as everything I tried was having no effect, but then something did and there was improvement.
Even now I still get swelling from time to time, but it was not made worse by the second jab.
As one person I knew died and several more have been very ill after catching Covid, I think it is simply something which might happen just as being in an accident or getting struck by lightening - but the vaccine has saved many lives already and will save many more in future.
It is devastating for the families and for those who are disabled by strokes particularly as these are fairly young people, but so many people were dying every day - I wrote down the numbers, soo when they began to reduce it was such a relief just to see that, particularly as I turned 70 last month.

With Sally on this, risks so low not bothered in least, anyway had both jabs now & happy to have top up at some point if necessary.

Being born is not without risk, so how the heck would the rest of one's life be? :D

Ah! That’s why A&E put a cannula in my arm, pumped in x ray dye & scanned me under the CT scanner for blockages to rule out a possibility of blood clots on Tuesday when GP sent me there after my ECG: went to GP the previous Tuesday when my heart rate became very fast, 140/150, during a cold; heart was still straining & GP was concerned about heart damage! All blood tests for damage & 2 CV tests, in a week GP told me get one too the previous week & one at A&E, were negative & I’ve had a few trips to A&E before with a fast heart rate so, that didn’t scare me but, the blood clots DID AND getting it checked out isn’t fun either: was warned before signing the consent form about hot flushes as the stuff is pumped through me & feeling I’ve wet myself; STILL a shock to actually feel it & a good thing they warned about it! Then, having to wait another 4 hours for the results kept my heart around 100 for the whole of the 12 hours in total I was in A&E: 3 sets of blood tests to rule out heart & other organ damage from the fast heart rate: kept clotting as it took so long to get blood very slowly from my vein each time they did!
