I have recently moved from lantus 16.5 units to Levemir.... but after starting on 19 units of Levemir, I'm now up to 18 units during the day and 12 at night.... with the 12 needing to be increased again!!

Cannot believe how much I am needing, anyone else experience this?

Also, I feel very 'flat' and not quite myself on it....... I think it's the Levemir?!

Sorry I can't help, I'm sure others here who have more experience will be along soon.
Ps
Just had a thought, could the pack of insulin have been compromised perhaps befor you received it.

I hope whatever the cause, it's sorted soon

Hi Lauren, how are your levels? Levemir has a very different profile from Lantus so everything can take a while to adjust. havd the increases in dosage been as a result of basal testing? Perhaps share some of the results on here and others might be able to help.

Hi Lauren, sorry to hear you are experiencing problems :( What was the reason for the change? What are your levels like? It does sound like quite an increase that you wouldn't normally expect to see - as @Ljc suggests, it might be worth trying a different cartridge (or pen, if you are using disposable pens).

I found the opposite when I changed to Levemir (not from Lantus though). I found I needed far less than I had been having and considerably less than my nurse thought I'd need. I think different insulins just react differently on different people - though it would be well worth trying a new cartridge just in case. I've been on Levemir nearly a year - I don't recall feeling washed out on it, but I did drop two dress sizes very quickly without trying!

When I was on injections I switched from Lantus to Levemir, in order to be able to split my background injections. I found that my total basal insulin was lower than before and more accurate. It may be worth checking the cartridge, as the change sounds quite a bit for you.

Have you done a basal rate? It is the best way of working out basal insulin.

You mention that you have changed your diet. When I tried a very low carb diet I was amazed that my BG went up rather than down, as I had not accounted for the protein that was getting converted in the absence of carbs. If this change of diet had coincided with the switch to Levemir the two could be muddled (back to basal testing).

I hope that you get things sorted.

I changed from Lantus due to low bloods at night.... I'm now wishing that I tried just moving my bedtime injection back a few hours instead of swapping to levemir and split doses.

I feel like I have better control with the split doses but I am sure it's making me feel different. Flatter and much more irratible.

The day dose seems to be good for me.... but my night one needs to go up again from 12.

It's all sort of coming together in terms of more stable bloods, I'm just worried that with nearing 30+ units of basal it's bad for me???? How much is too much?

I'm 33 and 8st 10lb ... 55kg

The highest basal I've ever been on was 45, when I was probably about 1st heavier than you. I don't think any amount is too much if it keeps your sugars level - if your body could make it, it would, no matter how much you needed. If you are getting side effects, they might settle in time - and if they don't, there's always other options 🙂
