I'm considering once again splitting my lantus injection

http://diabeteshealth.com/read/2007/07/17/5316/lantus-and-levemir--whats-the-difference/?section=200
- in the above article it says in one paragraph
"According to Dr. Richard Bernstein, however, Lantus also usually works better if injected twice a day"
plus when thinking about it sometimes more insulin may be needed either am or pm.

If I do decide to do a split injection I'm wondering whether it's best to start off with a 50/50 split & see where that takes me.

Any help or advice will be appreciated.

It's up to you.

There are two aspects to consider: % split and timing. Timing depends partly on what's convenient for you / how easy it is to remember / fit into your life and partly on what timing of insulin and what % doses works best for you.

You can always try a 50% split intitially and adjust as appropriate until you find timings that suit your lifestyle. There's no point commiting yourself to an injection at 1900, if you're usually driving home from work at that time, for example.

Help please!
Really can't decide whether to start doing a split with the lantus.
- like I mentioned when I started the thread "sometimes more insulin may be needed either am or pm" which does make sense
- timing would probably be best suited to 10:00 - 10:30 ish am & pm

I'd have to do an extra injection which wouldn't really bother me but the guilt would come in from using an extra needle & NHS costs 😱

If I were you Gill I would do as Copepod suggested and split it 50/50, half your current dose in the morning, half in the evening 12 hours later. Only by trying it and doing plenty of BG tests will you get the data to base decisions on.

Please do not worry about extra needle costs, your health is much more important🙂

I echo what was said in the last post. Also - From memory a box of 100 needles is about £10- so one needle is only about 10p. (It's not recommended to re use needles but some people do )
I cannot understand how aventis get away with the lantus being a once daily insulin spiel- seem to hear so many people who hypo during the first 1/2 of the 24 hour period and/ or go high later. I think the author of "Using Insulin" stated that about 1/3 of users do better with a split dose

So still trying to decide whether to do a split.

If I did a 50/50 split when would I know whether to have more in the am or more in the pm or less?

Within 3 days from all the extra BG readings you'll be doing, cos you'll want to check more often than usually, won't you Gill ? :D
