I am on Lantus solostar and have gradualy increased my dosage to 42 units is this high ? I am still getting a wakeing avarage of 7.2. would it be OK to increase to more units? I have no idea if 40 is a lot or a little.

I wouldn't say so! I am currently taking 36u a day, and am waking with levels in high 8's or low 9's. So I am thinking i have a way to get yet too....I have heard of people being on 60u...but don't know their situation.

thanks for that doddy it puts my mind at rest a bit to know I am not about to over dose

I think just take whatever you need to, to stay in a good bg range. Sounds like you're getting it cracked 😎

i take 23 units i should probably increase but i usually wake with hypos

Don't worry if you hear of others on much lower doses who are T1 or T1.5. Typically T2s use more insulin because of insulin resistance.

Could you ask for fast acting bolus as well? Seems it would help you and keep the basal down.

I currently take 44 units of Lantus.

thankyou for your reply I feel a lot better knowing that I am not way off the mark

I have just increased to 40u.

Rule of thumb according to both John Walsh (Using Insulin) and Gary Scheiner (Think like a Pancreas) your basal insulin should be somewhere around the 50% mark of your total daily dose. Mine sometimes slips to nearly 60%, but never above.

Have you ever tested your Lantus to ensure it's holding you steady and neither dropping your BG nor allowing it to rise? Instructions about half way down the page here

Aaron. What were you using before Solostar? I use Lantus but only 16 units pre bed, and on Humulin S pre meals. 8, 8, 14.

I was on Lantus but now on Levemir, but the doses would be the same roughly, which means I am on 60 units in total for my background requirement, down 10 units over the last 6 months....🙂
