Hi,

I've been trying to find out what re-usable pens I can use with lantus. I currently use an autopen 24, but that only has increments of 2. I want to be able to adjust in single increments but have searched around and can't find anything! I did find a disposable one (the Solostar) but I'd prefer a re-usable one.

If you use lantus, what type of pen do you use?

Hi Northerner,

I was on Lantus a few years ago so this is delving into the depths of my memory. I think I used my Novopens. I'm not too sure about that though. That or I had some specific pen for the insulin.
You'll want to ask you doctor about pens when you next go and see him.

I have the same as you but when I first went on lantus I was told that if I needed one which was in 1 unit increments instead of 2 I could have it. I'm almost certain someone on my dafne course had one (and it wasn't disposable) so something must exist, couldn't tell you the name though.

Doh! Thanks - I just looked on the Owen Mumford site (they make the autopen), and there is indeed a single increment version!

Thanks Tom. Don't really want to use novopens as I use them for novorapid - I would definitely inject the wrong insulin one day!

i use novopens but i have them in two colours and also i mark them as to which is for which insulin and i never swap them round so as to stop gettin muddled up lol

I was given this one, as well as the autopen that goes up in two unit increments when I was first put onto lantus. The only difference is that the single increment one only goes up to 22 units, which is a problem for some people.

I'm on 20 at the moment - have been since diagnosis. Perhaps they gave me the 2-increment one because they weren't sure if I'd go over 22 units eventually.

oooh I didn't even think about this before...

i'm on 20 but im pretty sure 21 would work better for me, so it would be good to give it a try.

I'm on 24, and I started on that, so I have no idea why I was given the other pen! I think the nurse was just giving me everything she could think of "just in case" :D I normally take my dose as two 12 unit doses, as I find I get more consistent absorption that way, so the pen has come in handy to make small adjustments.

i used to use the re usable lantus pen wif the two units but i didnt like the bit that u pushed in as u didnt get much control wif it.

im on the disposable one where u can do 1 units but i dont know any other type.

Yes, I'm not too keen on the way it works - I think it squirts the stuff in far too quickly!

I use the autopen which goes up in 1 unit increments it is green. I don't like the way that it kinda spring loaded delievrs the insulin very quickly. I wonder if this is the cause of the pain, or at least contributes to the pain accosiated with injecting lantus. I like with my novorapid pen i can control the speed of delivery.

Hi Northerner,

I've had one or two close shaves as far at that goes but I've normally realised before it was too late to. My pens are different colours so that's how I tell them apart.

yh i think because once u press the little plunger thing, the insulin goes in automatically until it is finished and for me that gave me pain most of the time.

the disposable pen is much better but i still feel a bit more pain wif that insulin rather than wif novorapid where i feel hardly anythin...

dont know if its to do wif the lantus insulin.. but hey just got to get on wif it

xx
